## What servicenow-nodejs does

servicenow-nodejs gives MCP-compatible AI clients access to ServiceNow data and platform operations. Its metadata-driven design discovers table structures and relationships at runtime, then exposes operations across more than 160 tables. Coverage includes IT service management, the configuration management database, Service Catalog, platform development, and Flow Designer.

The project describes a surface of more than 480 generated tools and 55 MCP tools, including generic operations that can work across tables and specialized convenience functions. The available operations include reading, creating, updating, and deleting records, as well as searching and handling selected ServiceNow workflows.

## How it works

The server can register multiple ServiceNow instances and route requests to a selected instance. Instance management includes adding, listing, testing, updating, removing, and migrating registered instances. The `SN-Set-Instance` and related instance functionality allow an MCP session to choose where requests should be sent.

Schema discovery happens at runtime, allowing table-aware operations without hard-coding every table definition into the client. Natural-language search provides an alternative to writing encoded ServiceNow queries. Batch operations can run parallel requests, and MCP resources provide read-only lookup and documentation content.

For transport, the package supports stdio for local MCP hosts and HTTP/SSE with bearer-token authentication. HTTP/SSE is intended for one trusted operator rather than shared, multi-user hosting. ServiceNow ACLs still control what the configured accounts can do.

## Setup and configuration

The runtime requires Node.js 20 or newer, REST API access to at least one ServiceNow instance, and valid credentials. The package can be run with `npx happy-platform-mcp`, installed globally with npm, or started from a source checkout.

The recommended setup registers instance metadata through the local CLI. Credentials are prompted interactively, masked, and stored in the operating system keychain. The registry defaults to `~/.config/happy-platform-mcp/instances.json`; `HAPPY_CONFIG_PATH` can select another metadata registry. The CLI does not automatically load `.env` files.

A stdio host can launch the installed command directly or invoke it through `npx`. `SERVICENOW_INSTANCE` selects an instance for the legacy single-instance environment fallback. For HTTP/SSE, `HAPPY_MCP_API_TOKEN` must be configured with a 64-character hexadecimal token; the transport refuses to start without a valid token.

## Limitations and notes

HTTP/SSE is designed for one trusted operator. Anyone holding the bearer token can use every configured ServiceNow credential, so separate servers are required for user or tenant isolation. The server does not replace ServiceNow ACLs.

The newer package name is `happy-platform-mcp`; older `servicenow-mcp-server` naming remains as a temporary compatibility path. Legacy single-instance environment variables and the package-relative instance registry are retained for backward compatibility, while the CLI's preferred registry stores metadata and credential references rather than plaintext secrets.
