## What ServiceNow MCP Server does

ServiceNow MCP Server gives an MCP-compatible AI client access to a ServiceNow instance's developer data plane. Its coverage includes the Table API, data dictionary, aggregate queries through the Stats API, CMDB records, and update sets. The server is suited to support and service-management work such as incident investigation, access analysis, CMDB checks, and release preparation.

Queries can target arbitrary ServiceNow tables, rather than only incident or platform-specific tables. Results can include table structure, inherited fields, choice values, record history, and aggregate counts. The server also provides focused guidance for interpreting access failures and reviewing changes before promotion.

## How it works

The server runs locally with `uvx mcp-server-servicenow` and communicates with an MCP client over stdio. Streamable HTTP is also supported. It authenticates to a configured ServiceNow instance and exposes tools according to the connected user's permissions.

A read-only integration user can access incidents, changes, problems, CMDB data, and aggregates. Schema inspection, update-set operations, and write actions require additional ServiceNow roles. With write permissions enabled, the client requests confirmation before each write. The `--check` option performs read-only connectivity, identity, role, table, schema, and aggregate checks without printing the password.

## Setup and configuration

Install `uv`, create a dedicated ServiceNow integration user, and configure the server with these environment variables:

- `SERVICENOW_INSTANCE_URL`: The ServiceNow instance URL.
- `SERVICENOW_USERNAME`: The integration user's username.
- `SERVICENOW_PASSWORD`: The integration user's password.

The setup instructions recommend a machine user with web-service access and the internal integration-user setting. A starting read-only configuration uses the `itil` and `snc_read_only` roles. Do not use the administrator account for the connection.

The server can be added to Claude Code, Claude Desktop, VS Code with GitHub Copilot, Codex, or Cursor. VS Code uses Agent mode for MCP interactions. A Claude Code plugin is available and exposes four ServiceNow skills as slash commands.

## Limitations and notes

ServiceNow permissions determine which tables, fields, schemas, update sets, and write operations are available. A `403` response generally indicates that the integration user lacks a required role. Personal Developer Instances may hibernate after inactivity and must be awakened before use. The server targets ServiceNow releases from Tokyo onward.
