## Description
MCP server for IT Glue, the MSP documentation platform. Semantic vector search over documentation, document and flexible-asset read/write, role-based access control, and bring-your-own-key support.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **itglue_list_document_folders** — read
- **itglue_get_document_image** — read
- **itglue_list_attachments** — read
- **itglue_create_document_image** — write
- **itglue_create_attachment** — write
- **itglue_build_vector_index** — write
- **itglue_delete_documents** — destructive
- **itglue_delete_flexible_asset** — destructive
- **itglue_delete_attachment** — destructive

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "mcp-itglue": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","mcp-itglue"],
    "env": {
      "ITGLUE_API_KEY": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `ITGLUE_API_KEY` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What selic/mcp-itglue does

selic/mcp-itglue MCP server exposes IT Glue operations through Model Context Protocol. It covers organizations, documents, document folders and sections, flexible asset types and records, document images, attachments, and vector-search indexes. Read tools can retrieve records and files, while write tools can create or update supported records, publish documents, add images or attachments, and rebuild the search index.

The server also includes destructive operations for deleting documents, flexible assets, attachments, document images, or document sections. These capabilities are separated into read, write, and destructive tiers so deployments can assign different access levels to viewers, editors, and administrators.

## How it works

For local use, the server runs over stdio and exposes its full tool surface to the connected client. For shared deployments, it runs over streamable HTTP with an MCP endpoint, health check, webhook route for incremental IT Glue index updates, and a manual refresh route. HTTP sessions are kept in memory, so a deployment should use one instance or provide sticky sessions behind a load balancer.

Semantic search uses OpenAI or Azure OpenAI embeddings and stores the resulting index in local JSON. The index can be refreshed manually, updated through an IT Glue webhook, or refreshed after writes.

HTTP access can use bearer tokens assigned to viewer, editor, or admin roles. Tools unavailable to a role are omitted from that session, and calls are checked again at runtime. Clients can also provide an IT Glue API key per session through the supported header when BYOK is enabled. IT Glue permissions then determine access for that client key.

## Setup and configuration

selic/mcp-itglue MCP server requires an IT Glue API key supplied through `ITGLUE_API_KEY` for the standard server-wide configuration. Accounts outside the United States can set `ITGLUE_REGION` to `eu` or `au`. The package can run with `npx`, from a source checkout after building, or in the provided Docker image.

Use stdio for a local Claude Desktop or Claude Code configuration. Docker defaults to HTTP and can expose port 3000. HTTP deployments can configure comma-separated `label:token` values with `MCP_TOKENS_VIEWER`, `MCP_TOKENS_EDITOR`, and `MCP_TOKENS_ADMIN`. If no role tokens are configured, the server grants admin access in development mode and emits a warning; this is not suitable for production.

BYOK behavior is controlled by `CLIENT_ITGLUE_KEYS`, which accepts `with-token`, `open`, or `disabled`. HTTP deployments can also enable staged uploads so clients transfer larger files directly before a tool attaches or embeds them.

## Tools and capabilities

Available tool groups include:

- Listing and retrieving organizations, documents, folders, sections, flexible asset types, flexible assets, images, and attachments.
- Searching the vector index and checking its status.
- Creating, updating, publishing, and deleting supported document content.
- Creating and updating flexible assets.
- Creating and deleting document images and attachments.
- Building the vector index and using endpoint discovery or a general IT Glue GET operation.

Attachments appear in an IT Glue record’s Attachments panel and do not render inside document content. Images intended for a document body use the document-image tools instead. An image can be supplied as base64, a URL, or a local path; HTTP staged uploads are available for larger files.

## Limitations and notes

Base64 transfer is intended only for small files because model tool arguments can become too large for screenshots or other substantial media. Staged upload slots are temporary, tied to the requesting principal, and consumed once. Document image content must use the returned relative resource path or a public HTTPS URL; IT Glue removes data URIs and its own S3 URLs from section content.

The server’s destructive tools permanently remove selected records or files, so deployments should assign them only to trusted roles. HTTP sessions are held in memory, and the server-wide IT Glue key is optional only when the chosen BYOK policy requires clients to provide their own key.
