## Description
This is an MCP server for interacting with the VRChat API. You can retrieve information about friends, worlds, avatars, and more in VRChat.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **vrchat_get_current_user** — Retrieve your own VRChat user information
- **vrchat_send_friend_request** — Send a friend request to another user.
- **vrchat_get_friends_list** — Retrieve a list of VRChat friend information. The following information can be retrieved:
    - "bio"
    - "bioLinks"
    - "currentAvatarImageUrl"
    - "currentAvatarThumbnailImageUrl"
    - "currentAvatarTags"
    - "developerType"
    - "displayName"
    - "fallbackAvatar"
    - "id"
    - "isFriend"
    - "last_platform"
    - "last_login"
    - "profilePicOverride"
    - "pronouns"
    - "status"
    - "statusDescription"
    - "tags"
    - "userIcon"
    - "location"
    - "friendKey"
- **vrchat_select_avatar** — Select and switch to a specific avatar by its ID.
- **vrchat_search_avatars** — Search and list avatars by query filters. You can only search your own or featured avatars. It is not possible as a normal user to search other people's avatars.
- **vrchat_list_favorited_worlds** — List favorited worlds by query filters.
- **vrchat_search_worlds** — Search and list worlds by query filters.
- **vrchat_get_instance** — Get information about a specific instance. Note: Detailed information about instance members is only available if you are the instance owner.
- **vrchat_create_instance** — Create a new instance of a world.
- **vrchat_join_group** — Join a VRChat group by ID
- **vrchat_search_groups** — Search VRChat groups by name or shortCode
- **vrchat_list_favorite_groups** — Returns a list of favorite groups owned by a user.
- **vrchat_list_favorites** — Returns a list of favorites.
- **vrchat_add_favorite** — Add a new favorite.
- **vrchat_list_invite_messages** — Returns a list of all the users Invite Messages. Admin Credentials are required to view messages of other users!
- **vrchat_request_invite** — Request an invite from a user. IMPORTANT: Always obtain explicit permission from the user before sending an invite request. Note that invite requests cannot be sent to users in private instances. Returns the Notification of type requestInvite that was sent.
- **vrchat_get_invite_message** — Returns a specific invite message. Admin Credentials are required to view messages of other users!

    Message type refers to a different collection of messages:
    - message = Message during a normal invite
    - response = Message when replying to a message
    - request = Message when requesting an invite
    - requestResponse = Message when replying to a request for invite

- **vrchat_get_notifications** — Retrieve a list of VRChat notifications.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "vrchat-mcp": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","vrchat-mcp"],
    "env": {
      "VRCHAT_USERNAME": "",
      "VRCHAT_AUTH_TOKEN": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `VRCHAT_USERNAME`, `VRCHAT_AUTH_TOKEN` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What sawa-zen/vrchat-mcp does

The sawa-zen/vrchat-mcp MCP server connects an MCP client to the VRChat API and presents selected API operations as structured tools. It covers both read and write actions across common VRChat resources, including friends, avatars, worlds, instances, groups, favorites, invites, and notifications.

This makes the server relevant to the 🎮 Gaming category for workflows where an agent needs to inspect VRChat account data or initiate supported account actions. It does not provide a general-purpose VRChat client; the available behavior is defined by the listed MCP tools.

## How it works

The server runs over standard input and output. After receiving VRChat credentials through environment variables, it authenticates requests against the VRChat API and makes the resulting operations available to the connected MCP client. The package can be started with `npx vrchat-mcp`.

Authentication requires `VRCHAT_USERNAME` and `VRCHAT_AUTH_TOKEN`. The repository documents obtaining an auth token with `npx vrchat-auth-token-checker`; that process may request a password and, when enabled, a two-factor authentication code.

## Setup and configuration

Set the required variables in the environment before starting the package:

```bash
export VRCHAT_USERNAME=your_username
export VRCHAT_AUTH_TOKEN=your_auth_token
npx vrchat-mcp
```

For Claude Desktop, add an `mcpServers` entry that invokes `npx` with `vrchat-mcp` as its argument and passes both variables in the `env` object. The documented configuration paths are `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\\Claude\\claude_desktop_config.json` on Windows. Users running through nodenv or nvm may need to provide the full path to `npx`.

For local development or troubleshooting, install dependencies and build with `npm install` followed by `npm run build`. The MCP Inspector can then launch `./dist/main.js` for browser-based inspection of the stdio server.

## Tools and capabilities

The available tools are grouped by VRChat resource:

- Friends: list friends and send friend requests.
- Avatars: search avatars and switch to a selected avatar.
- Worlds: search worlds and list favorited worlds.
- Instances: create an instance and retrieve details for a specific instance.
- Groups: search groups and join a group.
- Favorites: list favorites, add a favorite, and list favorite groups.
- Invites: list invite messages, request an invite, and retrieve a specific invite message.
- Notifications: retrieve notifications.

The sawa-zen/vrchat-mcp MCP server therefore supports both information retrieval and selected mutations, including friend requests, avatar selection, instance creation, group joining, and adding favorites.

## Limitations and notes

Authentication is credential-based and depends on a valid VRChat username and token. Treat the token as sensitive because its lifetime may be long.

The package is designed for stdio-based MCP use. If startup or tool calls fail during development, the project recommends building first, checking the environment variables, and using MCP Inspector to examine the running process.
