## Description
Romanian public data: ANAF company status, financials, court cases, BNR rates, shop checks

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **shop_check** — is this online shop legit? reads the CUI off the site, checks the company, its financials, insolvency cases and how old the site is, returns red flags / warnings / good signs
- **company_lookup** — status of up to 500 companies by CUI: name, address, Reg. Com. number, CAEN, deregistered, VAT registered, VAT on collection, split VAT, fiscally inactive, e-Factura registry. optionally as of a past date
- **company_financials** — filed balance sheets year by year: revenue, profit/loss, employees, debts, equity, cash
- **court_cases** — cases in every Romanian court by party name or case number: stage, parties and roles, latest outcome, next hearing, insolvency as debtor
- **exchange_rate** — BNR reference rate for any day since 2005, with conversion
- **iban_check** — is an IBAN well formed, which Romanian bank issued it, is it a Treasury account

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `uvx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "romania": {
    "command": "uvx",
    "args": ["romania-mcp-server"],
    "env": {
      "ROMANIA_MCP_CACHE": "",
      "ROMANIA_MCP_CACHE_PATH": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `ROMANIA_MCP_CACHE`, `ROMANIA_MCP_CACHE_PATH` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What Romania MCP server does

Romania MCP server exposes public Romanian business, legal, banking, and exchange-rate data through MCP tools. It can query ANAF by company identification number (CUI), retrieve filed financial statements, search cases across Romanian courts, obtain BNR reference rates, and validate IBANs locally.

The `shop_check` tool combines several checks into a structured assessment of an online shop. It reads the CUI from the site, compares the company with ANAF records, examines financials and insolvency cases, and checks site age using the Wayback Machine. Results group observations into red flags, warnings, and good signs rather than presenting a definitive fraud verdict.

## How it works

Company status can be requested for as many as 500 CUIs and can optionally be evaluated as of an earlier date. Financial data is returned year by year, including revenue, profit or loss, employees, debt, equity, and cash. Court searches accept a party name or case number and report the procedural stage, party roles, latest outcome, next hearing, and insolvency information where available.

The exchange-rate tool supports BNR reference rates for dates since 2005 and can perform conversions. `iban_check` works offline, checks whether an IBAN is structurally valid, identifies known Romanian banks, and indicates Treasury accounts. A valid IBAN does not establish account ownership.

## Setup and configuration

Romania MCP server requires Python 3.10 or newer. Install it from PyPI with `pip install romania-mcp-server`, or run it with `uvx` without a separate installation. Claude Desktop uses a standard MCP configuration with `uvx romania-mcp-server`; Claude Code can add it with `claude mcp add romania -- uvx romania-mcp-server`. Cursor and Windsurf use the same JSON configuration format as Claude Desktop.

Responses are cached in SQLite by default at `~/.cache/romania-mcp/cache.sqlite3`. Cache behavior can be changed with `ROMANIA_MCP_CACHE=off` or a custom database path through `ROMANIA_MCP_CACHE_PATH`. Cache durations vary by data type: court cases are cached for three hours, company status for six hours, financials for 24 hours, current rates for one hour, and older rates for 30 days.

## Tools and capabilities

- `shop_check`: evaluates company and website signals, including CUI presence, ANAF status, financial activity, insolvency, site age, and ANPC links.
- `company_lookup`: checks ANAF company status and tax registrations for up to 500 CUIs.
- `company_financials`: retrieves available annual balance-sheet figures.
- `court_cases`: searches Portal Just records by company or case identifier.
- `exchange_rate`: gets historical BNR rates and performs conversions.
- `iban_check`: validates IBAN structure and identifies supported Romanian banking details.

## Limitations and notes

Romania MCP server searches ANAF by CUI, not by company name. ANAF limits requests to roughly one per second, so the server spaces requests when processing batches. Some companies have financial data only from around 2020 onward, and annual statements may not appear until the middle of the following year.

Portal Just searches are limited to 1,000 cases and depend on its plain-HTTP API. For `.ro` domains, automated WHOIS data is unavailable under the stated registry restrictions, so site age relies on Wayback Machine archives. `shop_check` cannot assess reviews, delivery performance, or whether products exist. Court records contain information about real people and should be used for business due diligence rather than investigating individuals.

The project is released under the MIT license.
