## Documentation

## What Returnolio MCP server does

Returnolio MCP server exposes Returnolio's stock research through the Model Context Protocol for signed-in users. The available data covers individual company scores, comparisons, filtered screens, ticker lookup, monthly selections, market conditions, corporate events, and a user's saved watchlist or portfolio.

The research tools are read-only. They cannot place trades, move money, or edit watchlists, portfolios, or other user data. Portfolio results are returned as numbers only. Responses include a link to the corresponding view in the Returnolio application, where applicable, and carry Returnolio's financial-publisher disclaimer rather than investment advice.

## How it works

The hosted service is available at `https://mcp.returnolio.com/mcp`. A user connects an MCP client, signs in with a Returnolio account, and then calls the tools available under that account's plan. The plan determines which tools return results.

Returnolio MCP server uses OAuth for sign-in. The web application issues access tokens, while the server verifies them using an Ed25519 public key. Calls from the server to Returnolio's gateway include a signature covering the request path, query string, and token. The gateway checks the user's plan again, applies rate and result-size limits, and attaches the relevant disclaimer.

Operational protections include per-user and per-server session limits, idle timeouts, and limits on opening sessions. Structured JSON logs record events while removing or masking tokens and email addresses.

## Setup and configuration

For Claude, add a custom connector under Settings, Connectors, and paste the hosted MCP URL. Sign in with a Returnolio account after connecting. Instructions for other MCP clients are linked from Returnolio's MCP documentation.

The repository can also be run locally. Copy `.env.example` to `.env`, provide `MCP_JWT_PUBLIC_KEY` and `MCP_SERVICE_SECRET`, install dependencies with `npm ci`, run `npm test`, and start the service with `npm start`. The service refuses to start if the public key or service secret is invalid or missing. A local process without a Returnolio gateway can start, but its tool calls are rejected.

## Tools and capabilities

Returnolio MCP server provides these tools:

- `get_stock_score` returns one company's score and its Quality, Earnings-Power, Value Margin-of-Safety, Momentum, and Smart Money pillars.
- `compare_stocks` places several stocks side by side.
- `screen_stocks` finds companies matching supplied filters.
- `search_tickers` looks up a ticker by company name.
- `get_top10` returns the monthly Top 10.
- `get_moonshot` returns Moonshot Detected picks.
- `get_market_overview` returns headline indexes and a macro snapshot covering rates, inflation, and jobs.
- `get_calendar` returns earnings, events, and IPOs.
- `my_watchlist` reads the signed-in user's watchlist.
- `my_portfolio` reads the user's portfolio as numbers.
- `get_app_link` returns a link to the corresponding Returnolio application page.

## Limitations and notes

The Returnolio MCP server does not provide trading or account-editing operations. Access is tied to a signed-in user and constrained by the user's Returnolio plan. The hosted gateway also enforces rate limits, session controls, and result-size caps.

Returnolio describes itself as a financial publisher, not an investment adviser. The research should not be treated as a recommendation to buy or sell. Self-hosting the repository does not provide useful tool responses by itself; a Returnolio gateway must be available behind the service.
