## What the RepoPilot MCP server does

RepoPilot MCP server exposes RepoPilot’s local repository analysis to an MCP-compatible agent. Its review examines changes rather than making a safety decision on the developer’s behalf. Results can identify changes to authentication, request trust, deployment, dependencies, secrets, network calls, subprocesses, filesystem writes, SQL, error handling, and other behavior.

The review also looks for ways a change may weaken its own verification. Examples include focused or skipped tests, removed test cases, lost assertions, lint or type suppressions, reduced coverage thresholds, disabled strict mode, and CI steps made non-blocking. It reports direct dependents and broader files affected through the dependency graph.

## How it works

Analysis runs on the local machine or CI runner that invokes RepoPilot. It does not upload source to a hosted service and does not use an embedded language model. The MCP server gives an agent access to the local scan and review functions, while the underlying command-line workflows can compare the working tree with a base revision or a saved snapshot.

A review produces an overall decision such as PASS, REVIEW, BLOCK, or NOT ASSESSED, along with reasons, coverage limits, and a suggested next action. Signals are evidence for investigation, not proof that a flow is exploitable or that an application is safe. For example, a taint-lite result indicates that a recognized input reaches a recognized sink in changed source; application context still determines the impact.

## Setup and configuration

RepoPilot MCP server is distributed as part of RepoPilot, which can be installed through Cargo or npm. The project also provides a local stdio MCP server and documents an MCP entry for agent setup. Its MCP Registry name is `io.github.MykytaStel/repopilot`.

The repository supports configuration for review checks and can generate initial suggestions with `repopilot init --suggestions-output repopilot-suggestions.toml`; generated suggestions are separate from active configuration. Existing findings can be adopted with a baseline before gating new work. The provided material does not specify MCP-specific environment variables or a single universal client configuration file.

## Tools and capabilities

RepoPilot MCP server makes local scan and review capabilities available to agents. The broader RepoPilot toolset can:

- Review uncommitted work, a base comparison, or changes since a snapshot.
- Scan a repository for a broader view beyond one change set.
- Detect altered security boundaries, risky flows, and local import or export contracts.
- Identify weakened tests, relaxed CI gates, and verification suppressions.
- Trace changed-file impact through direct dependents and the dependency graph.
- Produce console, Markdown, JSON, HTML, or SARIF reports through RepoPilot workflows.
- Create a local AI handoff containing repository facts, findings, and a prioritized plan without making model calls.

The same analysis can also run in CI, including through the project’s GitHub Action, which can publish SARIF or a pull-request summary.

## Limitations and notes

The server is local and deterministic, but its findings remain advisory. It does not establish exploitability, prove application safety, or replace a reviewer’s judgment. Coverage depends on the repository, recognized patterns, configured checks, and the analyzed revision. A review is marked VERIFIED only when repository checks are explicitly selected with `--verify` and pass on the reviewed revision.

RepoPilot is aimed at inspecting Git changes and repository structure. The supplied material does not claim support for hosted source analysis, model inference inside the server, or arbitrary non-repository data sources.
