## Documentation

## What r-huijts/oorlogsbronnen-mcp MCP server does

The r-huijts/oorlogsbronnen-mcp MCP server makes the Oorlogsbronnen, or War Sources, database available through MCP. It is intended for research into the Netherlands during World War II, especially the period from 1940 through 1945. Queries can cover events, people, places, organizations, military operations, persecution, resistance, occupation, liberation, and everyday life.

Example research goals include finding records about the February Strike, searching for photographs of liberation celebrations, investigating a family name in Amsterdam, or locating accounts related to Operation Market Garden.

## How it works

An MCP-compatible assistant sends a natural-language search request to the server. The server passes the request to the Oorlogsbronnen database and returns matching archive items in a JSON response. Each result can include an identifier, title, content type, description when available, and a direct URL to the item on Oorlogsbronnen.

The main search input is `query`, which accepts terms such as names, dates, locations, events, or descriptive phrases. Searches can begin broadly and then be narrowed by adding a location, date, person, or event. The response is designed for both display in an assistant and additional processing by software.

## Setup and configuration

The r-huijts/oorlogsbronnen-mcp MCP server can run through the published NPX package or from a local source checkout. With NPX, configure Claude Desktop to launch `npx` with the `-y` flag and the `oorlogsbronnen-mcp` package name, then restart Claude Desktop.

For a source installation, clone the repository, run `npm install`, and build it with `npm run build`. Configure Claude Desktop to launch Node against the generated `dist/mcp-server.js` file. The local configuration must use the absolute path to the repository. The provided setup instructions do not specify environment variables.

## Tools and capabilities

The server exposes one MCP tool: `search_ww2_nl_archives`. Its required `query` parameter is a string. Optional `type` filtering supports `person`, `photo`, `article`, `video`, `object`, `location`, and `book`; without that filter, all supported types may be included.

The optional `count` parameter controls how many results are returned. It defaults to 10 and accepts values from 1 through 100. This allows an assistant to request a small set for an initial search or a larger set for broader review.

## Limitations and notes

The tool can report errors for empty or invalid queries, unsupported content types, and counts outside the 1–100 range. It may also report temporary API failures or rate-limit responses. Search results depend on the material indexed by Oorlogsbronnen and should be followed through to the linked records when source verification is needed.

It does not provide client-specific setup instructions for other MCP clients, nor does it describe authentication settings or environment variables.
