## What qweather-mcp does

The qweather-mcp MCP server exposes QWeather data as tools that an MCP-compatible client can call. It covers current weather, daily forecasts, hourly forecasts, short-term precipitation, weather warnings, lifestyle indices, and air quality.

The daily forecast tool supports 3, 7, 10, 15, and 30-day ranges. Forecast responses can include temperature highs and lows, day and night conditions, sunrise and sunset, precipitation, humidity, wind, and UV information. The hourly tool supports 24, 72, or 168 hours and returns details such as temperature, wind, humidity, pressure, precipitation probability, and cloud coverage.

## How it works

The qweather-mcp MCP server starts as a Node-based stdio process. An MCP client launches it with `npx -y qweather-mcp`, then supplies QWeather credentials through environment variables. Requests made through the tools are sent to the configured QWeather API base URL.

Two authentication modes are available. JWT mode uses a QWeather project ID, credential ID, and an Ed25519 private key supplied through a file path or directly as PEM content. The server signs EdDSA tokens, backdates their issue time by 30 seconds, gives them a 15-minute lifetime, and reuses them until shortly before expiry. API key mode uses `QWEATHER_API_KEY` and is intended as the legacy option.

## Setup and configuration

Create credentials in the QWeather Console before starting the server. Set `QWEATHER_API_BASE` to the API host required by the account. For JWT authentication, also set `QWEATHER_PROJECT_ID`, `QWEATHER_KEY_ID`, and either `QWEATHER_PRIVATE_KEY_PATH` or `QWEATHER_PRIVATE_KEY`. If both private-key variables are present, the file path takes precedence. Literal `\\n` sequences in the direct key value are converted to line breaks.

For API key authentication, set `QWEATHER_API_KEY` instead of the complete JWT configuration. Complete JWT settings take precedence if both authentication types are present. Partial JWT settings without a usable API key cause startup failure; missing credentials also produce a startup error. The selected authentication mode is written to stderr when the process starts.

A basic MCP client configuration uses `npx` as the command, `-y qweather-mcp` as its arguments, and the required variables in the client's `env` block. Smithery provides an installation command for Claude Desktop.

## Limitations and notes

QWeather credentials and an appropriate API base URL are required; the server does not provide weather data without access to the QWeather API. API key authentication is documented as a legacy mode, while QWeather recommends JWT authentication and has announced API key deprecation for 2027. The material documents stdio operation and does not describe another transport. Forecast availability and returned fields depend on the corresponding QWeather API data for the requested location.
