## Description
Generate PDFs from templates using the PDFMonkey API

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **list_workspaces**
- **list_templates**
- **get_template**
- **generate_document**
- **get_document_status**
- **list_documents**
- **delete_document**
- **list_snippets**
- **get_snippet**
- **get_quota**
- **get_user_info**

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "pdfmonkey": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","pdfmonkey-mcp-server"],
    "env": {
      "PDFMONKEY_API_KEY": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `PDFMONKEY_API_KEY` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What PDFMonkey MCP server does

The PDFMonkey MCP server gives an AI assistant access to PDFMonkey account and document operations through MCP. It can discover accessible workspaces, inspect templates, generate documents from template data, check document status, and manage generated files. Template inspection includes the template's HTML, CSS, and properties, which can help an agent understand the expected input before generating a document.

The server also exposes PDFMonkey's reusable Liquid snippets. Account-oriented tools return workspace information, user details, quota, and plan data. This makes the server suitable for workflows where an agent must first find a template, submit data for rendering, and then retrieve the resulting document link or status.

## How it works

The server runs as a Node.js MCP process and communicates with clients over standard input/output. It uses the `PDFMONKEY_API_KEY` environment variable to authenticate requests to the PDFMonkey API. An MCP client can discover the available tools and invoke them as part of a conversational workflow.

`generate_document` handles asynchronous PDF creation by polling for the result every 1.5 seconds, with a three-minute timeout. If generation does not finish within that period, `get_document_status` can be used later with the document ID. Document listing supports filters including status, template ID, page, and update time.

## Setup and configuration

Obtain an API key from the PDFMonkey dashboard, then provide it to the process as `PDFMONKEY_API_KEY`. The repository documents three installation approaches: build and run a Docker image, install the published npm package globally, or clone the source repository and build it with npm.

For Docker, the container must be started with interactive input enabled using `-i`. For a source installation, the built entry point is `dist/index.js`; the npm installation provides the `pdfmonkey-mcp-server` command. The README includes a Claude Desktop configuration example for each approach. A published Docker Hub image is not available in the documented setup, so the Docker image is built locally.

## Tools and capabilities

The server provides 11 tools:

- `list_workspaces` lists accessible workspaces.
- `list_templates` and `get_template` find templates and return template details.
- `generate_document` starts PDF creation and waits for completion.
- `get_document_status`, `list_documents`, and `delete_document` inspect or manage generated documents.
- `list_snippets` and `get_snippet` access Liquid code snippets.
- `get_quota` returns quota and plan information.
- `get_user_info` returns account details.

## Limitations and notes

PDFMonkey download URLs expire after one hour. Permanent share links are documented as available to premium users. The API has a stated rate limit of 60 requests per minute. Automatic polling stops after three minutes; a later status request is required if generation continues beyond that window.

The server requires a valid PDFMonkey API key and access to the PDFMonkey API. Invalid or missing credentials prevent normal operation. The README reports 80 passing tests and approximately 89% overall statement and line coverage, but these figures describe the project tests rather than API availability or document-generation success.
