## Description
Packing slips: cartons, contents, weights, chargeable weight and what is still to pack.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **packing_list_create** — Open a packing list against an order: the reference, the consignee, where it ships to, the date
- **packing_expect** — Declare an ordered line, so the shortfall is real. Nothing is read from the quotes, work-order or invoice store
- **carton_add** — Add a carton: a label, the empty weight in whole grams, and all three outside dimensions or none
- **pack_item** — Put a quantity of one item into a named carton, with the per-unit weight in whole grams
- **unpack_item** — Take a packed line back out by its L01-style id. Deleted, not zeroed
- **packing_list_show** — The whole list: cartons with contents and weights, the ordered lines, the shortfall, and whether it is ready to ship
- **packing_list_list** — Packing lists newest first, filtered by status, order reference or consignee
- **carton_report** — Tare, net, gross, volume, volumetric and chargeable weight, per carton and for the shipment
- **packing_shortfall** — Ordered against packed: what is short, what is over-packed, what is not on the order
- **packing_list_status** — draft to packed to shipped, or cancelled. Shipping records the carrier and tracking, and freezes the list
- **packing_slip** — The slip as text on every tier. Pro also writes it to `out_path` as a .txt file
- **packing_list_delete** — Delete a list for good. A shipped list is refused: it is the record of what left the building
- **license_status** — Which tier this install is on and where the key came from
- **license_activate** — Store a Pro key for this server

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "packing-list": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@theluckystrike/mcp-packing-list"]
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What packing list does

The packing list MCP server records the physical contents of a shipment against an order reference. An agent can create a list with consignee, destination, and date details, declare the lines expected to ship, add cartons, and place item quantities into those cartons. The server keeps ordered lines separate from packed lines, so it can report what remains short, what is over-packed, and what was packed without being declared.

Packing slips contain shipment details rather than prices. This server does not perform money calculations and does not read order lines from quote, work-order, or invoice stores. The invoice for the same order is treated as a separate document.

## How it works

Mass values use whole grams, and carton dimensions use whole centimetres. Cartons may include an empty, or tare, weight and either all three outside dimensions or no dimensions. Supplying only some dimensions is rejected.

Carton reports calculate tare, net, gross, volume, volumetric weight, and chargeable weight for each carton and the shipment. Volumetric weight uses length × width × height divided by a divisor supplied to the reporting tool. Chargeable weight is based on the greater of physical and volumetric weight. If any carton lacks dimensions, shipment-level volumetric and chargeable totals are returned as null rather than silently excluding that carton.

The packing list MCP server computes derived weights and shortfalls when requested instead of storing duplicate totals. Status can move from draft to packed to shipped, or to cancelled. Shipping records the carrier and tracking information and freezes the list; shipped lists cannot be deleted.

## Setup and configuration

You can use the hosted endpoint at `https://mcp.zovo.one/mcp/packing-list` over streamable HTTP. It requires a token supplied as a Bearer authorization header. Clients that cannot set headers can use the token path form instead. The endpoint is also usable with a free anonymous token or a Pro key.

For local use, download the `.mcpb` release and open it in Claude Desktop, or clone the repository and build it:

```sh
git clone https://github.com/theluckystrike/mcp-packing-list.git
cd mcp-packing-list
npm install && npm run build
```

Configure an MCP client to run `node /absolute/path/to/mcp-packing-list/dist/index.js`. The package is not currently published to npm, so an `npx` installation is not a working setup path. Local data is stored under `${XDG_DATA_HOME:-~/.local/share}/mcp-servers/packing-list/`. The server makes no network calls in local mode and requires no API key or account.

## Tools and capabilities

The packing list MCP server provides tools to:

- Create, list, inspect, and permanently delete packing lists.
- Declare expected order lines and add cartons with tare weights and dimensions.
- Pack or remove item quantities from named cartons.
- Show packing shortfalls and identify over-packed or undeclared items.
- Calculate carton and shipment weight information.
- Change shipment status and record carrier and tracking details.
- Return a text packing slip; Pro can also write it to a specified `.txt` path.
- Check license status and store a Pro key.

A contract resource documents the status model, weight basis, shortfall states, free-tier limits, and writable directory. The `pack_the_shipment` prompt guides an agent through the packing workflow.

## Limitations and notes

The free tier permits three open packing lists at once; completed, cancelled, or deleted drafts no longer consume that limit. Pro removes the open-list cap and enables writing packing slips to a file. Cartons, ordered lines, and packed lines remain unlimited in both tiers.

A shipped list is retained as the record of what left the building and cannot be deleted. Local operation reads a shared business profile for the name and address printed on the slip but does not modify that profile.
