## What osulivan/skill4agent-mcp-server MCP server does

The osulivan/skill4agent-mcp-server MCP server makes skill4agent's skill catalog available to MCP-compatible AI applications. It focuses on three stages of working with a skill: discovery, inspection, and installation guidance. An agent can search the catalog, examine the full documentation associated with a result, and request the available download links or installation commands.

This is a catalog and information interface rather than a tool that installs files directly. The installation operation returns information needed to install a selected skill. A typical workflow is to search with a broad term, use the returned skill ID with the detail tool, assess the SKILL.md content, and then request installation information for the chosen result.

## How it works

The package communicates with the skill4agent API through MCP tools. `search_skills` requires a keyword and accepts optional category and result-limit parameters. Categories can be supplied in English or Chinese. The default result limit is 10, and the maximum is 100.

`get_skill` requires a `skillId`, normally obtained from `search_skills`. It returns detailed information for that skill, including the complete SKILL.md content. `install_skill` also takes a `skillId` and provides the skill's installation information, including download links and installation commands as described by the project.

The server is launched as a command process, making it suitable for MCP clients that support standard command-based server configuration.

## Setup and configuration

Install the package globally with npm:

For a Claude Desktop setup, add an MCP server entry whose command is `npx` and whose argument list runs the package with `-y`. The server uses `https://skill4agent.com/api/mcp` by default. Set `SKILL4AGENT_API_URL` in the client's `env` object to point to a different API endpoint, such as a custom deployment.

Local development uses the repository's normal Node.js workflow: install dependencies with `npm install`, build with `npm run build`, use `npm run dev` for development mode, or run the compiled entry point with `node dist/index.js`.
