## Description
The OSDev wiki (wiki.osdev.org) offline and searchable: search, sections, links.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **wiki_search** — Ranked full-text search with match snippets. Titles and redirect names count most, and an exact title match is marked `*`.
- **wiki_sections** — A page's outline: numbered headings with their sizes.
- **wiki_page** — A page as plain text, or one section (by number or heading) including its subsections. Code blocks are kept verbatim and redirects are followed.
- **wiki_links** — What a page links to (flagging links to pages that don't exist) and what links to it, including links made through a redirect.
- **wiki_update** — Fetch the newest dump and rebuild the index. It does nothing if the index is already current.
- **wiki_status** — Shows the source dump, page counts, the index's age and its location.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `uvx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "osdev-wiki-mcp": {
    "command": "uvx",
    "args": ["osdev-wiki-mcp"],
    "env": {
      "OSDEV_WIKI_DIR": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `OSDEV_WIKI_DIR` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What osdev-wiki-mcp does

The osdev-wiki-mcp MCP server gives an AI agent offline access to content from wiki.osdev.org. It is aimed at operating-system development topics such as descriptor tables, paging, interrupt controllers, timers, ACPI, disk controllers, bootloaders, and toolchains. The package does not include wiki content; it downloads a public archive and stores the resulting index locally.

Search results include snippets and ranking information. Page retrieval can return complete plain text or a selected section with its subsections. Redirects are followed, so common abbreviations can resolve to their target pages. HTML tables used for bit layouts are rendered as readable rows, and code blocks are retained verbatim.

## How it works

The server obtains the newest available WikiTeam dump from archive.org rather than crawling the live site. During an update, it downloads the history file, verifies its MD5 against the archive manifest, and keeps the newest revision for each article. SQLite FTS5 provides the local full-text search index.

The osdev-wiki-mcp MCP server reports the selected dump and index details through `wiki_status`. Because WikiTeam dumps are periodic, the local data can be several months older than wiki.osdev.org. Page results include links back to the corresponding wiki page.

## Setup and configuration

Python 3.10 or newer is required, along with a Python build that includes SQLite FTS5. Install the package with:

```bash
pip install osdev-wiki-mcp
```

Build the initial local index with:

```bash
osdev-wiki-mcp --update
```

For Claude Desktop, the README shows adding it as a stdio server with `claude mcp add osdev-wiki -- osdev-wiki-mcp`. An initial update downloads roughly 5 MB and creates an index of about 18 MB. The default data directory is platform-specific: `%LOCALAPPDATA%\\osdev-wiki-mcp` on Windows, `~/Library/Application Support/osdev-wiki-mcp` on macOS, or `$XDG_DATA_HOME/osdev-wiki-mcp` with `~/.local/share/osdev-wiki-mcp` as the fallback elsewhere. Set `OSDEV_WIKI_DIR` to choose another location.

## Tools and capabilities

- `wiki_search` performs ranked full-text searches with snippets. Titles and redirect names receive extra weight, and exact title matches are marked with `*`.
- `wiki_sections` lists numbered headings and their sizes for a page.
- `wiki_page` returns a whole page or one section selected by number or heading. It follows redirects and includes subsections.
- `wiki_links` lists outgoing and incoming links, identifies missing targets, and accounts for links through redirects.
- `wiki_update` downloads the newest dump and rebuilds the index, skipping work when the index is current.
- `wiki_status` shows the source dump, page count, index age, and storage location.

## Limitations and notes

The osdev-wiki-mcp MCP server depends on archived data because the live wiki API is protected by a bot challenge. It therefore cannot guarantee current content. A page heading that occurs more than once is reported with its alternate location, and truncated page output explains how to request more characters.

The code is MIT-licensed, but the wiki material has mixed licensing. Content added since June 6, 2011 is described by the wiki as CC0, while older material may have different terms. The repository contains no wiki content; downloaded material remains associated with the OSDev Wiki and its contributors.
