## Description
Experimental sandbox: custom-manufacturing quotes, lead time, DFM. Not a real supplier.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **discover_capabilities** — List supported manufacturing processes, materials, and the fields an estimate accepts.
- **request_quote** — Get an instant cost estimate for a custom manufactured part. Returns unit price, total, lead time, and assumptions. Indicative and non-binding.
- **refine_quote** — Refine a previous estimate (change quantity, material, tolerance, finish) by passing its quote_token.
- **get_lead_time** — Estimated production lead time in days, by process and quantity.
- **dfm_feedback** — Rule-based design-for-manufacturability feedback for a part specification.
- **estimate_bom** — Estimate costs for a multi-part bill of materials in one call.

    Each part: {process, quantity, material?, bounding_box_mm?, tolerance_mm?,
    finish?}. Returns per-line estimates, a BOM total, and the longest lead
    time. Indicative and non-binding. Max 50 lines.

- **compare_processes** — Compare cost and lead time for one part across manufacturing processes.

    Provide 2-8 process names and a quantity; returns per-process estimates
    sorted by total cost, plus a lowest-cost / shortest-lead-time note.
    Indicative and non-binding.

## Documentation

## What OpenFab MCP server does

The OpenFab MCP server connects MCP-capable agents to an independent manufacturing estimation service. It evaluates custom-production requests for CNC machining, injection molding, sheet metal work, laser cutting, metal stamping, 3D printing, urethane casting, and PCB fabrication.

An agent can submit a part specification and production quantity to receive an indicative estimate. Results may include unit price, total price, expected lead time, a quote token, and the assumptions used for the calculation. The service is intended for early-stage sourcing analysis and engineering decisions rather than commercial purchasing.

## How it works

OpenFab exposes seven MCP tools: `discover_capabilities`, `request_quote`, `refine_quote`, `get_lead_time`, `dfm_feedback`, `estimate_bom`, and `compare_processes`. Together, they support capability discovery, initial quotation requests, revisions to an existing quote, schedule estimates, manufacturability review, bill-of-materials estimation, and comparisons between production methods.

The service also offers REST equivalents. Its documented routes include `/capabilities`, `/quotes`, `/quotes/{token}/refine`, `/lead-time`, `/dfm`, `/bom`, and `/compare`. Discovery documents are available through several `.well-known` paths, as well as `/llms.txt` and `/openapi.json`.

A typical request supplies manufacturing details such as process, quantity, material, tolerance, and bounding-box dimensions. For example, a CNC request can specify aluminum, a quantity of 50, a 0.1 mm tolerance, and dimensions of 120 × 80 × 25 mm. The returned estimate remains non-binding.

## Setup and configuration

The OpenFab MCP server is available remotely at:

`https://openfab-22100483453.us-central1.run.app/mcp/`

For clients that use stdio-style MCP configuration, connect through the `mcp-remote` package:

```bash
npx mcp-remote https://openfab-22100483453.us-central1.run.app/mcp/
```

REST clients can send JSON to the service, including a `content-type: application/json` header. The repository does not describe authentication settings or required credentials.

## Tools and capabilities

The OpenFab MCP server supports these agent operations:

- Discover supported manufacturing capabilities.
- Request an initial cost estimate.
- Refine a prior estimate using its quote token.
- Ask for an estimated production lead time.
- Obtain design-for-manufacturing feedback.
- Estimate costs or quantities for a bill of materials.
- Compare available manufacturing processes.

Supported manufacturing areas include machining, molding, sheet metal, laser cutting, stamping, additive manufacturing, urethane casting, and PCB production.

## Limitations and notes

The OpenFab MCP server produces indicative estimates only. Pricing, timing, and manufacturability are subject to formal RFQ review, and the results do not create a commercial relationship. OpenFab does not accept or fulfill manufacturing orders.

Requests may be logged to improve the service. Treat submitted part specifications and related production data accordingly. The project is described as an experimental sandbox that measures how autonomous agents approach custom-manufacturing sourcing. Use its output for preliminary analysis, process selection, and quote refinement rather than as a purchase commitment or final supplier quotation.
