## Documentation

## What nx-console MCP server does

The nx-console MCP server provides Nx-specific context to AI features in supported editors. It is designed for repositories organized as Nx or Lerna workspaces, where understanding project boundaries, generators, targets, and workspace configuration is important.

Its primary focus is enriching AI interactions with three kinds of information:

- The architecture and structure of the current workspace
- Available Nx generators and their usage context
- Up-to-date Nx documentation

This context helps an AI assistant reason about an Nx repository using the conventions and capabilities of the workspace instead of treating it as a collection of unrelated files. Nx Console also provides editor interfaces for project details, generators, tasks, and workspace graphs, but those interfaces are separate from the MCP server itself.

## How it works

Nx Console includes MCP support for Visual Studio Code and Cursor. When used through those editor environments, the MCP functionality supplies workspace-aware information to the AI features available there. The server is intended to work alongside Nx projects and uses the repository's Nx context to inform AI responses.

The same MCP implementation is available independently through the `nx-mcp` npm package. This separate package allows the MCP server to be installed apart from the Nx Console extension. The repository therefore supports both an editor-integrated route and a standalone package route.

## Setup and configuration

Use Nx Console for Visual Studio Code from the Visual Studio Marketplace or OpenVSX Registry, or install the Nx Console plugin for JetBrains IDEs from the JetBrains Marketplace. Nx Console requires an Nx or Lerna workspace and Node.js. An Nx workspace can be created with `npx create-nx-workspace@latest my-workspace`, while `npx nx init` adds Nx to an existing repository.

For a standalone MCP installation, use the `nx-mcp` npm package. The package is separate from the Nx Console extension and is intended for using the MCP server independently. The workspace should contain Nx context for the server to provide relevant architecture, generator, and documentation information.

## Tools and capabilities

The MCP integration supports AI assistance with:

- Workspace architecture and project structure
- Nx generator knowledge
- Current Nx documentation
- Context from Nx-based repositories in VS Code and Cursor

Nx Console itself adds related developer workflows around this context. Its Project Details View exposes project tasks and configuration, the Generate UI parses generator schemas with autocomplete, validation, and dry-run previews, and the Projects view lists projects, targets, and configurations. These editor features complement the MCP experience but are not presented as a separate list of MCP tool names.

## Limitations and notes

Compatibility is intended for Nx versions starting with Nx 15. Older Nx versions may not provide full compatibility or functionality. The repository must be an Nx or Lerna workspace, and Node.js is required.

The MCP support described for editor AI is specifically associated with Visual Studio Code and Cursor. JetBrains support is provided through the Nx Console plugin, while the standalone `nx-mcp` package is available for installations separate from the extension.
