## Documentation

## What North Dakota Code does

The North Dakota Code MCP server gives AI agents access to the current North Dakota Century Code through two focused tools. `nd_statute` retrieves the full text of a section identified by citation, while `nd_search` finds citations by matching a topic or keyword against the Legislature’s official catchlines.

Citations use North Dakota’s title-chapter-section format, such as `12.1-16-01` or `47-16-13.1`. Chapter and section components may include decimal suffixes. The lookup uses the citations present in the indexed Code rather than relying on a fixed parser, allowing supported citation shapes to resolve as published.

## How it works

The North Dakota Code MCP server uses the Legislature’s combined Code index as a baked data table containing citations, official catchlines, and title and chapter context. That index supports in-memory topic search and identifies the chapter PDF needed for a citation lookup.

For statutory text, the server fetches the relevant chapter PDF from `ndlegis.gov` at request time. It extracts the requested section from that chapter instead of storing or redistributing the statutory text in the baked index. Section boundaries are determined from the verified citations belonging to the chapter, which helps distinguish actual section headings from cross-references in extracted PDF text.

## Setup and configuration

The North Dakota Code MCP server is keyless. A hosted streamable HTTP endpoint is available at:

Add that URL as an MCP server in a compatible client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf. The endpoint also exposes shared Pipeworx gateway meta-tools in addition to the North Dakota tools, so the tool list may be larger than the two pack-specific capabilities described here.

The source repository includes a bake script for refreshing the citation and catchline index when the Legislature updates its Code index. Running the script writes a new TypeScript data file and fails if the source page becomes unexpectedly small or produces too few rows.

## Tools and capabilities

- `nd_statute(citation)`: resolves a citation, fetches its chapter PDF, and returns the requested section text.
- `nd_search(query, limit?)`: searches official section and chapter catchlines and returns matching citations.
- Current Code content is retrieved from North Dakota legislative web sources without authentication.
- Repealed or redesignated sections may include the one-line disposition supplied by the Code source.

## Limitations and notes

Search is not full-text search. `nd_search` matches official catchlines, so it can find relevant sections even when the requested word does not appear in statutory prose, but it will not search the complete text of every section.

The North Dakota Code MCP server does not reconstruct amendment or enactment histories for in-force sections. It also does not provide current-era historical versions of sections. The available historical archive reaches older Revised Codes and Compiled Laws, not year-by-year versions of the modern Code.

This listing belongs to the ⚖️ Legal category. Results should be checked against the official source and reviewed by a qualified professional before being used for legal decisions.
