## Description
Search NOAA climate stations and datasets, fetch historical weather observations.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **noaa_climate_list_datasets** — List available CDO datasets with IDs, names, and temporal coverage
- **noaa_climate_list_data_categories** — List data category groups (Temperature, Precipitation, Wind, etc.)
- **noaa_climate_list_data_types** — List specific measurement labels (TMAX, TMIN, PRCP, SNOW, etc.) by dataset or category
- **noaa_climate_list_location_categories** — List the 12 location categories that scope location search
- **noaa_climate_find_locations** — Search geographic locations by category (states, cities, counties, zip codes, climate regions), with an optional name filter
- **noaa_climate_find_stations** — Search weather stations by location, bounding box, dataset, and data type
- **noaa_climate_get_station** — Fetch full metadata for a single station by ID
- **noaa_climate_fetch_data** — Fetch historical observation records for a dataset and date range
- **noaa_climate_search_storm_events** — Search the NCEI Storm Events Database for one year — tornadoes, hail, floods, hurricanes, with damage, casualties, and narratives
- **noaa_climate_get_billion_dollar_disasters** — Query NOAA's retired 1980–2024 Billion-Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters archive — CPI-adjusted costs and deaths per disaster, or per-year totals by disaster class

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `bunx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "noaa-climate-mcp-server": {
    "command": "bunx",
    "args": ["@cyanheads/noaa-climate-mcp-server@latest"],
    "env": {
      "NOAA_CDO_TOKEN": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `NOAA_CDO_TOKEN` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What noaa-climate-mcp-server does

The noaa-climate-mcp-server MCP server exposes NOAA climate and weather records as MCP tools and resources. It connects to Climate Data Online (CDO) for dataset discovery, location and station searches, station metadata, and historical observations. It also queries the NCEI Storm Events Database and NOAA’s Billion-Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters data.

The available data covers measurements such as maximum and minimum temperature, precipitation, snow, snow depth, wind, pressure, and sunshine. Storm event results can include event types, damage, casualties, narratives, and related episode information. Billion-dollar disaster queries can return CPI-adjusted costs and deaths for individual disasters or yearly totals grouped by disaster class.

## How it works

An agent can first inspect the `noaa://datasets` resource or call the dataset, category, data type, and location-category tools to identify valid query values. Location searches support categories including states, cities, counties, ZIP codes, and climate regions. Station searches can then use a location, geographic bounding box, dataset, data type, and date range.

Once a station is selected, `noaa_climate_get_station` returns its name, coordinates, elevation, and coverage dates. `noaa_climate_fetch_data` retrieves flat observation records for a dataset and date range, optionally narrowed by station, location, or data type. The response includes an effective-query record, which helps an agent inspect the request that was applied.

Storm searches require a year and can be narrowed by state, event type, month, episode, or minimum damage. The disaster tool provides either per-disaster details or annual summaries, as supported by the NOAA source.

## Setup and configuration

The noaa-climate-mcp-server MCP server supports STDIO and Streamable HTTP. A local STDIO configuration can run the npm package with `npx -y @cyanheads/noaa-climate-mcp-server`. The repository also publishes a hosted MCP endpoint at `https://noaa-climate.caseyjhand.com/mcp`.

Set `NOAA_CDO_TOKEN` when using CDO-backed features. The Storm Events search does not require a token according to the tool reference. The README provides installation paths for Claude Desktop, Cursor, and VS Code, including configurations that pass the NOAA token to the local process.

## Tools and capabilities

- Discover CDO datasets, measurement categories, data types, and location categories.
- Find locations by category and optional name filter.
- Search stations by location, bounding box, dataset, data type, and dates.
- Retrieve station metadata and historical observations.
- Search yearly storm event records with damage and narrative fields.
- Query billion-dollar disaster costs, deaths, and yearly class totals.
- Use dataset and station resources to provide context before tool calls.

## Limitations and notes

The noaa-climate-mcp-server MCP server applies source-specific date limits. Several daily and high-frequency datasets allow spans of up to one year, while monthly, annual, and some normal datasets allow up to ten years. Normal datasets require a 2010 calendar-year request. Storm event searches cover 1950 through the current partial year and can fail when NOAA has not published a file for the requested year.

For GHCND results, specify `units` as `metric` or `standard`. Without that option, values may be returned as raw tenths-of-unit integers. CDO queries also use pagination and limits, so broad searches may require multiple requests. Name filtering for locations requires a category and is restricted when the category exceeds the documented size limit.
