## Description
Official Nhost MCP server, bundled with the Nhost CLI. Lets AI coding assistants read your GraphQL schema, run the queries and mutations you allow, manage permissions and migrations, update Nhost Cloud project config, and search the docs.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
No confirmed install details yet, so no config is published. Follow the setup steps in the repository above.

## Documentation

## What nhost/nhost does

The nhost/nhost MCP server extends the Nhost CLI with Model Context Protocol access to Nhost projects. It is designed for AI coding assistants that need to understand or change an Nhost backend without treating the entire project as unrestricted.

Its project-facing capabilities include reading the GraphQL schema, executing approved GraphQL queries and mutations, managing permissions and migrations, and changing Nhost Cloud project configuration. It can also search Nhost documentation, giving an assistant access to product and platform guidance while it works.

The server fits Nhost’s development model, where backend configuration, database migrations, and Hasura metadata can be tracked in a project and deployed through a Git-based workflow.

## How it works

The MCP server is distributed as part of the Nhost CLI and communicates with compatible AI assistants through the Model Context Protocol. Access to GraphQL operations is controlled by specifying which queries and mutations the language model may run. This lets a team expose narrowly scoped data operations instead of granting unrestricted execution.

For local development, the Nhost CLI can create a project structure and run a Docker-based stack containing PostgreSQL, GraphQL, authentication, storage, and serverless functions. The MCP server can then support schema, metadata, migration, and configuration work in that development context. Cloud-oriented actions require authentication with `nhost login`; authentication is not needed for purely local work.

## Setup and configuration

Install the Nhost CLI through Homebrew, Nix, npm, pnpm, Yarn, Bun, or the Linux and macOS quick-install script. Installing the CLI as a project dependency can pin its version for a team. The CLI also supports macOS, Linux, and Windows through WSL2.

Initialize a project with `nhost init`, or connect the local setup to an existing Nhost Cloud project with `nhost init --remote`. Run `nhost up` to start the local services through Docker. Use `nhost login` before pulling configuration from an existing cloud project or deploying changes.

The MCP server is included with the CLI rather than installed as a separate package. Configure the permitted GraphQL queries and mutations according to the access an assistant should have.

## Tools and capabilities

- Inspect the Nhost GraphQL schema for query construction and backend development.
- Run explicitly permitted GraphQL queries and mutations.
- Manage project permissions.
- Create or manage database migrations and related metadata changes.
- Update Nhost Cloud project configuration.
- Search Nhost documentation from an AI-assisted workflow.

## Limitations and notes

Cloud configuration and deployment workflows require Nhost authentication. Local development requires Docker and Docker Compose, along with the CLI’s other documented dependencies such as Git and curl. The server’s GraphQL access is intentionally constrained by its allowed-operation settings, so an assistant cannot run operations outside that scope.

The CLI’s broader local-development environment includes services such as PostgreSQL, Hasura GraphQL Engine, authentication, storage, and functions. Those services are relevant when using the MCP server against a local Nhost project, but the MCP server itself is focused on controlled project and documentation access.
