## Description
Mileage log for deductible driving: trips, effective-dated rates, summaries and CSV export.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **trip_add** — Log one trip: date, from, to, distance in miles or km, purpose, category. Returns `TR-YYYY-NNNN
- **trip_list** — List trips oldest first, with the rate and amount each earns; filter by date range and category
- **trip_remove** — Remove a trip by its exact id, for entries made by mistake. The id is not reissued
- **rate_set** — Set what one mile or km is worth for one category in one jurisdiction from a date forward. A series, not one global number
- **rate_list** — Every rate on file, grouped by jurisdiction and category with effective dates in order
- **mileage_summary** — A date range (default the current year): per-category distance, the rate each trip earned, and the deductible amount, per currency
- **mileage_export** — The log as CSV for an accountant: date, from, to, distance, category, rate, amount. Pro
- **license_status** — Free or Pro, and the key

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@theluckystrike/mcp-mileage-log"]
  }
}
## Documentation
## What mileage log does
The mileage log MCP server keeps a structured record of driving for deductible-use calculations. Each trip can include its date, starting point, destination, distance, unit, purpose, and category. Trips receive identifiers such as `TR-YYYY-NNNN`, which can be used to remove incorrect entries later.
Categories can include business, medical, moving, charitable, or personal records. The server does not provide tax advice or include official rates. You enter the figures that apply to your jurisdiction and verify them independently.
The mileage log MCP server supports both miles and kilometers. It keeps those units separate in records and converts between them when a trip unit differs from the unit configured for its applicable rate.
## How it works
Rates are stored as dated entries rather than as one universal value. A rate belongs to a jurisdiction, category, unit, currency, and effective date. When a trip is listed or summarized, the server selects the rate that was active on the trip date. This allows trips from different years to use different rates automatically.
`trip_list` returns entries in oldest-first order and includes the rate and amount associated with each trip. Filters can restrict the result by date range or category. `mileage_summary` accepts a date range, defaulting to the current year, and reports distance, applied rates, and deductible amounts by category and currency.
Amounts are calculated per trip, rounded half-up to the cent, and then added to totals. Distance conversion uses the exact relationship of one mile to 1.609344 kilometers. Values in different currencies are not combined.
## Setup and configuration
Three supported setup paths are documented:
- Use the hosted streamable-HTTP endpoint with a bearer token or a token in the URL path.
- Install the downloadable `.mcpb` package for Claude Desktop.
- Clone the repository, run `npm install && npm run build`, and configure the generated `dist/index.js` as a Node MCP process.
The package is not published to npm, so an `npx -y @theluckystrike/mcp-mileage-log` installation currently fails. For local operation, data is stored under `${XDG_DATA_HOME:-~/.local/share}/mcp-servers/mileage-log/` in `trips.json`, `rates.json`, and `counter.json`. The local server has no account, API key, or network call; license keys are checked offline.
## Tools and capabilities
The mileage log MCP server exposes tools to:
- Add, list, and remove trips by exact identifier.
- Create and inspect effective-dated rates.
- Produce date-range summaries by category and currency.
- Export the log as CSV with trip, rate, and amount columns. CSV export requires Pro.
- Check license status and activate a license.
Free usage allows 20 trips per calendar month and one rate per jurisdiction and category, with overwrites remaining available. Pro removes the trip limit, supports unlimited rate series, and enables CSV export. Reading, listing, and summarizing existing records are not metered.
