## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **manage_project** — Manage GitHub Projects (v2): create, list, get, update, delete projects; manage readme, fields, views, items; handle templates and link to repos/teams. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_issues** — Manage GitHub Issues: create, list, get, update issues; manage comments and drafts; search with advanced filters; manage sub-issues. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_prs** — Manage Pull Requests: create, get, list, update, merge PRs; list and create reviews. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_milestones** — Manage Milestones: create, list, update, delete milestones; get metrics; find overdue and upcoming milestones. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_sprints** — Manage Sprints: create, list, update sprints; get current sprint; add/remove issues; get metrics and plan. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_labels** — Manage repository Labels: create and list labels. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_automation** — Manage Project Automations: list, get and delete the automation workflows of a GitHub project. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_iterations** — Manage Project Iterations: get configuration, current iteration, items; find by date; assign items. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_events** — Manage Events: subscribe to project events, get recent events, replay events. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_status_updates** — Manage project Status Updates: create, list, and get status updates. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **ai_generate** — AI-powered generation: generate/enhance/parse PRDs, add features, get next tasks, analyze complexity, expand tasks, create traceability matrices. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **ai_analyze** — AI-powered analysis: enrich issues (single/bulk), triage issues, schedule triaging, suggest labels, detect duplicates, find related issues. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **ai_plan** — AI-powered planning: calculate capacity, prioritize backlog, assess risk, suggest sprint composition, generate roadmaps and visualizations. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **agent_work** — Agent work operations: register agents, checkout/release/complete tasks, send heartbeats, submit/check review state, validate work products, and get handoff context. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **agent_manage** — Agent management: list/deregister agents, activity, work products, budgets (warningFraction or warningThreshold), stale reclaim, smart assignment, workload rebalancing, convergence, and registry cleanup. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **system** — System operations: health check and project field setup. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **discover_tools** — Discover available compound tools, their actions, and parameters. Always available regardless of group filter.
- **manage_branches** — Manage GitHub Branch Protection: get, update, and delete a branch's protection rules; list repository branches. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_releases** — Manage GitHub Releases: create, list, get, update, delete releases; get the latest release. Use the `action` field to select the operation.
- **manage_workflows** — Manage GitHub Actions Workflows: list workflows, trigger dispatch events, inspect run status and logs, list runs, and cancel runs. Use the `action` field to select the operation.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "mcp-github-project-manager": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","mcp-github-project-manager"],
    "env": {
      "GITHUB_TOKEN": "",
      "GITHUB_OWNER": "",
      "GITHUB_REPO": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `GITHUB_TOKEN`, `GITHUB_OWNER`, `GITHUB_REPO` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What mcp-github-project-manager does

mcp-github-project-manager turns GitHub into the coordination layer for AI-assisted software projects. Its MCP interface covers GitHub Projects v2, issues, pull requests, milestones, sprints, labels, iterations, automation rules, branch protection, releases, Actions workflows, events, and status updates.

The server also provides optional AI workflows. It can generate or refine product requirements, parse a PRD into tasks, materialize those tasks as GitHub issues, enrich and triage issues, detect duplicates, recommend labels, assess complexity and risk, prioritize backlogs, and compose sprint or roadmap plans.

Agent coordination is handled through dedicated work and management tools. Agents can register their role and capabilities, check out tasks, send heartbeats, report blockers, submit work products, and enter a review loop. Management actions support budgets, usage tracking, stale-agent recovery, workload balancing, assignment, and project convergence.

## How it works

The server exposes 20 compound tools rather than one MCP tool for every operation. Each call includes an `action` value, with parameters for that action. This keeps the advertised schema smaller while retaining access to 169 operations. `discover_tools` can return available actions and parameters for a domain or text query.

GitHub is the persistence layer. Project fields represent task claims and planning data, issue comments hold work products, and an agent registry is maintained on a dedicated branch using compare-and-swap writes. The server also exposes six read-only resources, including project, sprint, milestone, agent, configuration, and tool views. Six reusable prompts cover PRD review, task complexity, label suggestions, sprint risk, release notes, and issue triage.

The AI features are optional. Core GitHub and agent-management functions continue to work without an AI provider key. MCP transport uses stdio; webhook/SSE support is also available as an option.

## Setup and configuration

Run the server with Node.js 22.12.0 or newer. Installation options include a global npm package, `npx`, `pnpm dlx`, or Docker Compose. A typical stdio setup defines the following environment variables:

- `GITHUB_TOKEN`
- `GITHUB_OWNER`
- `GITHUB_REPO`

A working `gh auth login` session can provide authentication instead of setting `GITHUB_TOKEN`. The GitHub token requires `repo`, `project`, and `write:org` scopes. MCP clients can launch the package with `npx -y mcp-github-project-manager` and pass these values in the server environment.

## Tools and capabilities

The main tool groups include:

- `manage_project` for Projects v2, fields, views, items, templates, and repository or team links
- `manage_issues`, `manage_prs`, `manage_milestones`, and `manage_sprints` for core planning and delivery records
- `manage_branches`, `manage_releases`, and `manage_workflows` for repository operations
- `ai_generate`, `ai_analyze`, and `ai_plan` for requirements, issue analysis, prioritization, and roadmap work
- `agent_work` and `agent_manage` for registration, task claims, reviews, budgets, and coordination
- `system` for health checks and project field setup

The server is designed for stdio-capable MCP clients, including Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Windsurf, Roo Code, and VS Code with Copilot.
