## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "nestr-mcp": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@nestr/mcp"],
    "env": {
      "NESTR_API_KEY": "",
      "NESTR_OAUTH_TOKEN": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `NESTR_API_KEY`, `NESTR_OAUTH_TOKEN` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What nestr-dev/nestr-mcp does

nestr-dev/nestr-mcp MCP server gives compatible AI clients access to Nestr workspaces. It is suited to the Workplace & Productivity category and covers both operational work and the structures used by Holacracy, Sociocracy, and self-organizing teams.

The server can list accessible workspaces, retrieve workspace details, identify the authenticated user, and search Nestr for tasks, projects, and roles. Nest operations include reading details, fetching children, creating, editing, deleting, reordering, and applying or removing labels. A nest can also be inspected for property provenance, effective rights, deny reasons, and, when requested, people who can act on it.

For collaboration, the available operations include adding, reading, editing, and deleting comments, plus retrieving activity for a nest and its descendants. Organizational queries cover circles, circle roles with accountabilities and domains, workspace roles, and workspace members.

## How it works

The hosted service is available at `https://mcp.nestr.io/mcp` and uses OAuth authentication through the client. OAuth access follows the signed-in user's Nestr permissions. The package can also run locally through npm and authenticate with a Nestr API key or OAuth token. API-key access provides full workspace access regardless of user permissions, so the authentication choice affects the scope of changes an assistant can make.

Beyond basic nest management, tools handle recurring tasks, projects, and meetings. They can set or remove recurrence, list virtual and materialized occurrences, skip one occurrence or all following occurrences, update an occurrence, and delete an entire series. Graph-link operations connect nests through named relationships, while the available workspace tools also include labels, project lists, metrics, insight history, and enabled workspace apps.

## Setup and configuration

For the hosted option, add the remote MCP URL in Claude Desktop or use the Claude Code HTTP command, then authenticate in the browser. Cursor is also named in the setup guidance, with step-by-step instructions available from the hosted service.

For local use, run `npx @nestr/mcp` and configure the MCP client to launch `npx -y @nestr/mcp`. Set either `NESTR_API_KEY` or `NESTR_OAUTH_TOKEN` in the client environment. API keys are created in a Nestr workspace under Settings, Integrations, and Workspace API access. The hosted route handles OAuth without requiring a local environment variable.

## Tools and capabilities

nestr-dev/nestr-mcp exposes tools for:

- Workspace discovery, identity, search, and workspace creation; workspace creation requires OAuth.
- Nest CRUD operations, child lookup, reordering, labels, provenance, rights, and actionability checks.
- Recurrence rules and occurrence-level changes.
- Comments, discussions, and activity history.
- Circles, roles, accountabilities, domains, and users.
- Graph links between related nests.
- Personal inbox, daily-plan, personal-label, and tension tools where supported by OAuth.

It can display tasks and projects, allow completion and inline title edits, support drag-and-drop ordering, show parent context, and link back to Nestr.

## Limitations and notes

nestr-dev/nestr-mcp requires authentication for local operation. OAuth-only tools include workspace creation and the personal tools; API keys do not reproduce user-specific permission filtering. API-key authentication instead grants full workspace access, making credential handling important when enabling write or delete operations.

Interactive UI behavior depends on MCP client support for MCP Apps. Clients without that support can still use the underlying tools through their normal MCP interface. The supplied setup documentation specifically names Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and Cursor.
