## Documentation

## What MAX CLI does

MAX CLI connects MAX messaging data to terminal workflows and MCP-compatible AI clients. It supports both a personal MAX account and bots, with separate access paths for each. Personal-account features cover chats, message history, groups, contacts, files, attachments, and voice messages; voice messages can be transcribed locally.

Agents can inspect unread conversations, search messages, review recent exchanges for promises and pending responses, watch for new messages, and create replies. Sending is available when the selected profile and permissions allow it. The CLI also supports reactions, message editing, forwarding, polls, and scheduled sending, as well as checks for unanswered questions and group rules in groups managed by the user.

## How it works

The personal account is added as another MAX device after QR-code authentication, with SMS login available through web.max.ru. Read content is stored in a local copy, enabling searches and reading in offline mode. Commands can emit JSON for scripts, while errors are returned separately with stable exit codes.

For AI agents, the `max personal mcp` command starts the local MCP connection. Agent skills provide command instructions and constraints for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Gemini CLI. MCP clients can use predefined requests such as `/catch-up`, `/review`, `/reply`, and `/find`.

Profiles can be configured as read-only, restricted to an approved set of writable chats, or limited by a messages-per-hour rate. Reading does not mark messages as read by default, and the CLI avoids choosing between ambiguous chat matches.

## Setup and configuration

Install the package globally with npm, then authenticate and optionally install an agent skill:

```sh
npm install -g @wirecat/max-cli
max personal setup
max skill install --for all
```

`max personal setup` guides QR login and can install skills for a selected agent with `--agent claude`, `codex`, `cursor`, `gemini`, `all`, or `none`. The CLI can also be tested without a global install using `npx @wirecat/max-cli --help`.

The supported runtimes are Node.js 22.16 or newer in the 22.x line, Node.js 24 or newer, or Bun 1.3 or newer. Windows, macOS, and Linux are supported. Add the MCP configuration with `max personal mcp add claude-code` or `max personal mcp add codex`; `max personal mcp config` generates configuration for Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other clients. Profiles that can send messages require explicit confirmation before MCP write access is enabled.

## Tools and capabilities

- Read unread messages without marking them read.
- Search the locally stored conversation copy, including offline searches.
- Review recent conversations and identify promises or expected replies.
- Transcribe voice messages locally.
- Draft and send replies subject to profile permissions.
- Export data as JSONL or Markdown.
- Inspect and moderate group activity using configurable checks that mark findings by default.
- Access MAX bots through the official Bot API.

## Limitations and notes

Personal-account operations use MAX’s unofficial internal API, which may change without notice and may conflict with MAX service terms. Bot operations use the official Bot API and are separate from that limitation.

The personal-account feature set does not include circles or two-step password settings. Write operations should be configured carefully because a default profile may be able to send messages. If a connection fails during sending, the CLI reports the failure and is designed not to create a duplicate when the operation is retried.
