## Description
Search and retrieve GIFs from Giphy's vast library through the Giphy API.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **query**
- **limit**
- **offset**
- **rating**
- **lang**
- **tag**

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "mcp-server-giphy": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","mcp-server-giphy"],
    "env": {
      "GIPHY_API_KEY": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `GIPHY_API_KEY` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What magarcia/mcp-server-giphy MCP server does

The magarcia/mcp-server-giphy MCP server exposes selected Giphy API operations through MCP. It lets an MCP-compatible AI client search Giphy with a text query, request a random GIF, or retrieve currently trending GIFs. The server is intended for workflows where an agent needs to discover GIFs and receive their associated URLs and metadata rather than interact with Giphy through a browser.

Search results and individual GIF responses can include the Giphy identifier, title, page URL, image variants, image dimensions, and other metadata when available. The image object may contain multiple formats, each with a direct image URL and width and height values.

## How it works

The client calls one of three tools:

- `search_gifs` accepts a required query and optional limit, offset, rating, and language values.
- `get_random_gif` returns one random GIF and can narrow the result with a tag or content rating.
- `get_trending_gifs` returns a paginated list of trending GIFs and accepts limit, offset, and rating values.

Search and trending requests default to 10 results and support up to 50. Their offset values provide pagination control. Search uses English by default when no language is supplied. Rating values can be selected from Giphy's documented options: `g`, `pg`, `pg-13`, or `r`.

## Setup and configuration

The magarcia/mcp-server-giphy MCP server requires a Giphy API key. Create a Giphy Developer account, register an application, and obtain the key from the Giphy developer dashboard.

For Claude Desktop, configure an MCP server entry that runs `npx -y mcp-server-giphy` and passes `GIPHY_API_KEY` in the entry's environment. The repository also documents a local development flow using `npm install`, `npm run build`, and `npm start`. Development mode, tests, and MCP Inspector usage are available through the repository's npm scripts.

## Tools and capabilities

`search_gifs` supports text-based discovery with pagination, content-rating filtering, and language selection. `get_random_gif` is useful when a workflow needs an unpredictable result, optionally constrained by a tag and rating. `get_trending_gifs` exposes Giphy's current trending collection with pagination and rating filtering.

The response format is organized for agent use and preserves practical media details. A client can use the returned page URL to refer to the GIF on Giphy or use one of the image URLs and its dimensions when choosing a format.

## Limitations and notes

Requests depend on a valid Giphy API key and the access level associated with that key. The material does not specify rate limits, API error behavior, caching, or upload and mutation operations. The documented server focuses on searching and retrieving GIF data; it does not describe GIF creation, editing, or publishing.

The available rating filters are limited to `g`, `pg`, `pg-13`, and `r`. Search and trending result counts are capped at 50 per request, with pagination available through the offset parameter. The magarcia/mcp-server-giphy MCP server is licensed under MIT.
