## What Lombardia Trains does

The Lombardia Trains MCP server exposes train information for Lombardy through seven MCP tools. It can identify station codes, show departures and arrivals, find direct connections, plan a journey with one change, report the current position and delay of a train, and provide the current date and time in Italy.

Its data comes from the regional timetable published as open data, together with public ViaggiaTreno services from RFI/Trenitalia and Trenord APIs. No API key, account, or web scraping is required. Information can include scheduled services, live delays, platforms, cancellations, stop-by-stop progress, and crowding when those upstream sources provide it.

## How it works

Use `now` before interpreting relative requests such as “tonight,” “Saturday,” or “Monday morning.” The tool supplies the Italian date and time that other calls need. Station inputs can be either a station name or a code, and times can use `HH:mm` for today or an ISO timestamp for another date.

The server does not silently choose among ambiguous stations. If a name matches multiple locations, it returns the alternatives so the calling model can ask the user to clarify. Requests for places outside the supported coverage area receive an explanation rather than an invented result.

`find_connection` searches only for direct trains. It uses live departure boards and candidate train stop lists, so its results can include current delays and platforms, but it does not build a transfer. `find_journey` is the transfer-aware option: it plans a route with at most one change from timetable data and may use Swiss open data when the regional timetable does not cover part of the trip. Journey options are ranked by arrival time, and planned times do not include live delay updates.

## Setup and configuration

Install the .NET global tool with:

Register the resulting `lombardia-trains-mcp` command in an MCP client using a standard stdio configuration. Claude Desktop can launch it with a server entry whose command is `lombardia-trains-mcp`. Claude Code can register the same command with `claude mcp add lombardia-trains -- lombardia-trains-mcp`.

No environment variables, credentials, or API keys are specified for running the server.

## Limitations and notes

The one-change limit is deliberate; the server does not search journeys requiring two or more changes. Direct-connection results and train-status data depend on the public upstream services, while journey planning uses scheduled timetable information and therefore should not be treated as live-delay-aware.

Coverage is focused on Lombardy and does not imply service for every nearby destination. Station names can refer to separate national and regional stations, so clarification may be necessary. For the most current operational picture, combine timetable-based journey planning with the live board or train-status tools where appropriate.
