## Description
AI agent monitoring: alerts when your agents fail, stall or need you

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Remote MCP endpoint (confidence: high). Install path detected from listing signals. Add as a URL/SSE server in your client:

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "lastping": {
    "url": "https://lastping.dev/mcp/"
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What LastPing MCP server does

LastPing connects AI assistants to the LastPing hosted monitoring service. Through MCP, an agent can create monitoring and read the monitoring information associated with its work. The service is designed around expected check-ins: it can alert when an agent fails, becomes inactive, waits for approval, or does not begin. It also covers cron jobs and CI/CD pipelines.

The repository contains both the MCP client implementation and the `lastping` command-line tool. The hosted MCP endpoint is the recommended way to give an assistant access to the current tool set. The service is available at `https://mcp.lastping.dev/mcp`.

## How it works

An agent connects to the hosted endpoint using a client-specific MCP configuration. Most clients can use the endpoint and authenticate through LastPing; Cursor and Windsurf use the URL with an API key. Claude Code can connect directly over HTTP. Claude Desktop can use a packaged extension or the `mcp-remote` bridge.

For command-based workloads, the CLI wraps an existing command without changing how that command runs. It sends a start event, executes the command, and reports the resulting exit code. A zero exit code is treated as success, while any other code is treated as failure. The wrapper passes through standard input and output, preserves the wrapped command's exit status, and does not prevent the command from running when a ping cannot be delivered.

## Setup and configuration

Install the CLI on macOS or Linux with the repository's install script; prebuilt binaries are provided for amd64 and arm64, and checksum verification is performed. Alternatively, install it with Go. Windows binaries are available from the releases page.

Create a monitor in the LastPing web app, or have an assistant create one through MCP. Then run a command such as `lastping run --monitor <monitor-id> -- ./backup.sh`.

MCP clients connect using the hosted URL. API-key authentication uses a write-scope key from LastPing settings. Claude Desktop's packaged extension stores the key in the system keychain and does not require Node.js. The bridge configuration requires Node.js and `npx`.

## Tools and capabilities

The LastPing MCP server provides agent-facing operations for setting up monitoring and reading monitoring data. The CLI reports job starts, completion status, exit codes, and the tail of stderr for failures. It also configures OpenTelemetry trace export for the wrapped process, adding monitor and run identifiers to resource attributes. When an API key is available, it supplies an authorization header for trace export unless the process already defines one of the relevant OpenTelemetry variables.

## Limitations and notes

The hosted service is required for the MCP endpoint. The README documents connection instructions for Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, Codex CLI, and Gemini CLI, while other client-specific setup is provided in the project documentation. The Claude Desktop extension is signed with a self-signed certificate, so Claude Desktop displays it as unverified. The CLI installation instructions cover macOS and Linux directly; Windows users should use the releases page.

The LastPing MCP server monitors expected activity rather than replacing application-level error handling. A wrapped process still needs to run normally, and trace export depends on the process or its libraries supporting OpenTelemetry.
