## What kyb MCP server does

The kyb MCP server provides shared memory for AI agent fleets through a Git-backed collection of Markdown entries. It organizes records into three supported kinds: general knowledge, incident reports, and tasks. Each entry has a key, body, metadata, and tags, with writes handled as upserts. Repeating an unchanged write produces no content change.

Git is the source of truth rather than a separate database. A changed write creates a commit, and the commit SHA acts as the version identifier. This preserves authorship, history, diffs, and rollback through the underlying repository. The system also supports retrieving earlier versions so agents can inspect how operational knowledge changed over time.

This places the kyb MCP server in the Knowledge & Memory category for use cases where context must persist across agent sessions, hosts, or teams.

## How it works

The Rust server stores the Git canon and builds a Tantivy index when it starts. The index is disposable and can be rebuilt from Git. It covers current and historical versions, allowing searches for both present knowledge and previous states.

Search uses BM25 lexical retrieval and, when the model is available, vector retrieval from the multilingual-e5-small ONNX model. Reciprocal-rank fusion combines the result sets. The model runs locally on CPU; without it, lexical search remains available. This arrangement supports multilingual queries while retaining ranking for exact technical terms.

Closing an incident or task removes its file from the active working tree and archives the final record. Archived incidents and tasks remain in listings, retrieval, and default search. Deleting ordinary knowledge is treated as a retraction and removes it from default search, while Git retains its history.

## Setup and configuration

Install the server binary with `cargo install knowyourbusiness --locked`, then run `kyb-server`. A source checkout can be started with `cargo run --release`, and the repository also provides Docker Compose support. The documented default listener is `127.0.0.1:9310`.

Configuration is optional. `KYB_DATA` selects the Git canon directory, `KYB_INDEX` selects the Tantivy cache, and `KYB_ADDR` changes the listening address. `KYB_AUTH` controls authentication mode, while `KYB_AUTH_FILE` identifies the authentication file. Binding with authentication disabled trusts the network, so deployment reachability matters.

## Tools and capabilities

- Search current and historical knowledge, incidents, and tasks.
- Create or update records with Git-versioned writes.
- Track incidents through open, mitigated, and resolved states.
- Track tasks through open, in-progress, blocked, done, or dropped states.
- Preserve resolutions, follow-ups, ownership, priorities, and parent-task relationships.
- Reject bodies that resemble tokens, private keys, or passwords.

## Limitations and notes

The kyb MCP server uses a flat key space with tags; it does not provide projects or namespaces. Secrets should not be stored in the base, and secret-like writes are rejected. Hybrid vector search depends on the local model being present. Incident and task closure requires a resolution, and unresolved follow-ups can produce warnings.

The README names Claude Code and Codex among the clients used with KYB. It also describes a separate client CLI and agent skill, so installing the server binary alone does not install those client-side components.
