## Description
The Tenth Man Protocol — structured contrarian analysis for decision-makers via MCP

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "kontra-mcp": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","kontra-mcp"],
    "env": {
      "KONTRA_DEFAULT_MODE": "",
      "KONTRA_LOG_LEVEL": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `KONTRA_DEFAULT_MODE`, `KONTRA_LOG_LEVEL` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What kontra-mcp MCP server does

kontra-mcp MCP server turns a decision or plan into a structured contrarian analysis request. It is designed to challenge the position supplied by the user rather than balance it with an equal list of advantages and disadvantages. Optional context lets the caller provide constraints, evidence, timing, team details, or other information that should shape the analysis.

The default `counter` mode assumes the decision is wrong and develops the strongest case against it. Its output covers blind spots, hidden assumptions, a strongest counter-argument, and what-if scenarios. This is suited to architecture decisions, strategy changes, hiring plans, and product bets.

Three additional modes target different stages of decision-making:

- `probe` asks 7–10 questions across motivation, evidence, alternatives, stakes, and timing, without supplying answers or analysis.
- `redteam` creates 3–5 ranked failure scenarios with likelihood estimates, triggers, cascades, warning signs, mitigations, and an overall vulnerability score from 1 to 10.
- `premortem` assumes the decision failed 12 months later and lays out a failure narrative, timeline, root causes, missed signals, and lessons learned.

## How it works

kontra-mcp MCP server uses a prompt-return design. When the tool is called, it builds an adversarial prompt from the supplied parameters and returns that prompt to the MCP client. The client’s existing LLM generates the final analysis; the server does not execute the prompt itself.

This design means no API key is required and the server makes no additional network calls for analysis. Output quality depends on the model available through the MCP client. The README identifies Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code as supported client options.

## Setup and configuration

Install the package through `npx` and register it with an MCP client. For Claude Code, the documented command is:

```bash
claude mcp add kontra -- npx -y kontra-mcp
```

For Claude Desktop, add a `kontra` entry with `npx` as the command and `-y kontra-mcp` as its arguments in the client configuration. Cursor and VS Code use the same command and argument pair in their MCP settings.

Two environment variables are available. `KONTRA_DEFAULT_MODE` sets the mode used when a request omits `mode`; its default is `counter`. `KONTRA_LOG_LEVEL` controls logging and accepts `debug`, `info`, `warn`, or `error`, with `info` as the default. No environment variable is required for the documented basic setup.

## Tools and capabilities

The MCP tool accepts three parameters:

- `statement` — required text containing the decision, plan, or conclusion to analyze.
- `context` — optional background, constraints, or supporting data.
- `mode` — optional `counter`, `probe`, `redteam`, or `premortem` selection.

kontra-mcp MCP server fits decisions that need structured challenge rather than a generic caution. It does not provide a probability matrix, dashboard, or independent human judgment; it surfaces possible weaknesses for the user and model to evaluate. The tool’s purpose is analysis of the supplied position, not a neutral comparison of both sides.
