## What Kiln MCP server does

The Kiln MCP server gives a coding agent a local workflow for authoring procedural 3D assets. The agent writes JavaScript that uses Kiln’s geometry and material helpers; Kiln executes that source, produces rendered views, performs structural checks, and can write a GLB export. The original source remains available for later changes.

Assets can be reviewed from multiple angles, measured, and checked with image-independent structural QA. Kiln also supports named parts, immutable source revisions, anchored edits, a local asset library, and revision history. Projects are optional, so a single asset does not require a project record, asset pack, or hosted account.

The workflow suits tasks such as generating a low-poly prop, refining proportions after inspection, or producing a portable GLB for use elsewhere. CPU rendering is available for geometry review. Material-faithful views use an optional local render service, and the reported fidelity should be checked when evaluating textures or metallic materials.

## How it works

Kiln runs on the developer’s machine through MCP, the command-line interface, or the JavaScript/TypeScript SDK. An initialized authoring workspace contains project-local instructions, skills, launchers, and a `kiln_workspace` MCP connection. The coding agent supplies the model; Kiln’s tools do not require a separate model API key.

A typical loop is: ask the agent to create an asset, inspect several rendered views, revise the source, run checks again, and save both the editable source and a GLB. The package also includes a local dashboard with materials, optional projects, and Live Review. CLI commands can discover available capabilities, render a source file, and open the local view.

## Setup and configuration

Use Node.js 22 or 24 LTS with npm. Install `@instruktlabs/kiln` in a separate installation directory, then run `kiln-init` against the intended authoring workspace. Initialization accepts harnesses including Claude, Codex, OpenCode, Agy, Hermes, Copilot, and Cursor Agent. Keep the authoring workspace separate from the engine installation so the generated launcher uses the matching Kiln installation, Node version, and source store.

For an existing project, Kiln 1.1 and later can preview adoption changes before writing files. The adoption flow preserves existing instructions and unrelated configuration and reports conflicts before overwriting files. Local Claude Code and Codex plugins use the same workspace setup. Other MCP clients can connect directly.

## Tools and capabilities

- Geometry and material helpers for procedural asset source.
- Multi-view rendering, measurements, and structural QA.
- Editable source revisions with named parts and anchored edits.
- Local asset storage and revision history.
- GLB and portable source exports.
- CLI commands for capability discovery, rendering, and viewing.
- TypeScript SDK with compiled ESM and type declarations.
- Optional local dashboard, projects, materials, and Live Review.

## Limitations and notes

Kiln is local, free, open source, and account-free. Hosted Kiln is described as a separate, free, invite-only introductory service with shared request limits; joining Discord does not provide access automatically. Local rendering works without a GPU, but material fidelity depends on the optional render service and should be verified against its reported fidelity.

Experimental implicit modeling and the alternative Three.js exporter are opt-in and have documented stability boundaries. A public hosted Kiln service and vendor directory listings are not available yet. The project is released under the MIT license.
