## Description
A local task board per project: columns, due dates, estimates, priorities and a link into your time tracker. All data stays on your machine.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **task_add** — Add a task: title plus optional project, column, due date, estimate, priority, tags and notes. A new project name creates its board; a partial name that matches exactly one existing project is used as that project.
- **task_list** — Table of tasks, filtered by project, column, tag, `due_before` or `overdue`. Finished tasks are hidden unless you ask for them. Prints 200 rows by default and says how many more there are; raise it with `limit` (max 2,000).
- **task_move** — Move a task to another column on its board.
- **task_update** — Change any field: title, notes, due (`none` clears it), estimate, priority, tags, column or project.
- **task_done** — Mark a task done: it moves to the done column and is stamped with the time.
- **task_delete** — Delete a task. The id is never reused.
- **task_search** — Find tasks by text in the title, notes, tags or id.
- **board** — Column-by-column summary of one board: tasks, estimate total, actual total, overdue count.
- **task_start_timer** — Return the exact arguments to pass to the time-tracker server's `timer_start` for this task, and record the link on the task.
- **task_log_time** — Add real minutes worked to a task, so estimate and actual can be compared.
- **project_list** — Every board with open and done counts, remaining estimate and overdue count.
- **project_delete** — Delete an empty board and free its project slot. A board that still holds tasks, open or done, is refused with a task named; clear them with `task_delete` first.
- **overdue** — Everything past its due date, across all boards; `as_of` measures against another day.
- **weekly_review** — Done versus planned for a week, with estimate against actual per project. This week is free; past weeks are Pro.
- **columns_set** — Replace one board's columns (Pro). Tasks in a removed column move to the first column.
- **license_status** — Free or Pro, and where to upgrade.
- **license_activate** — Activate a Pro key (verified offline).

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "kanban": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@theluckystrike/mcp-kanban"]
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What kanban does

The kanban MCP server gives an AI client a task board for each project. Tasks can carry a title, notes, tags, due date, estimate, priority, project, and column. New projects create their own boards, and tasks receive short stable identifiers such as `NS-12`.

The default board has backlog, todo, doing, review, and done columns. Tasks can be moved between columns, edited, completed, searched, or deleted. Completing a task moves it to the done column and records the completion time. Duplicate open tasks with identical task details are refused rather than added again.

Board and project reporting includes open and completed counts, remaining estimates, overdue totals, actual logged time, and column-by-column summaries. The `weekly_review` tool compares planned estimates with completed work and actual time. The `kanban://today` resource provides due-today and overdue tasks, while the `plan_week` prompt turns open work into a day-by-day plan based on available hours.

## How it works

Local operation stores data as plain JSON under `${XDG_DATA_HOME:-~/.local/share}/mcp-servers/kanban/`. The README states that data is not uploaded, an account is not needed for local use, and license keys are checked offline.

The server can also run as a hosted streamable-HTTP endpoint at `https://mcp.zovo.one/mcp/kanban`. Hosted requests require a token, supplied either as an `Authorization: Bearer` header or in the URL path. The task timer handoff does not start a timer itself: `task_start_timer` returns the exact arguments for a separate time-tracker server and records the link on the task.

The kanban MCP server can be used with Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The repository is a read-only mirror of the upstream server source.

## Setup and configuration

Three supported installation paths are described. For hosted use, obtain a token from the connect or token endpoint and configure the MCP client for the streamable-HTTP URL. For Claude Desktop, download the `kanban.mcpb` bundle from the latest release and open it.

For a local source build, clone the repository, run `npm install`, and then run `npm run build`. Configure the client to execute Node with the absolute path to `dist/index.js`. The package is not published on npm yet, so an `npx -y @theluckystrike/mcp-kanban` command is not currently a working installation method.

Set `MCP_LICENSE_KEY` in the client configuration for Pro mode, or activate a key with `license_activate`. No environment variable is required for the basic local server.

## Tools and capabilities

The kanban MCP server exposes tools for:

- Creating, listing, updating, moving, completing, deleting, and searching tasks.
- Summarizing boards and listing projects.
- Finding overdue work and reviewing weekly estimates against actual time.
- Logging minutes and preparing arguments for a linked time tracker.
- Deleting empty project boards and replacing columns in Pro mode.
- Checking license status and activating a Pro key.

Due dates accept calendar dates and relative forms such as `today`, `tomorrow`, `+3d`, weekdays, and `next friday`. Task listings hide finished work by default, return up to 200 rows by default, and allow a maximum `limit` of 2,000.

## Limitations and notes

The free tier supports three project boards and 200 open tasks. It uses the five default columns, limits weekly review and estimate-versus-actual reporting to the current week, and permits up to 2,000 rows per listing call. Pro removes the board and task-count limits, enables custom columns, and provides historical weekly reporting.

A project cannot be deleted while it contains open or completed tasks. Remove those tasks first. Removing a column with `columns_set` moves its tasks to the board's first column. The time-tracker integration requires passing the returned arguments to that separate server. The hosted endpoint is not anonymous for tool calls: requests without a token receive HTTP 401.
