## Description
Estimate solar vitamin D synthesis: whether it happens now, minutes needed by Fitzpatrick skin type and viable months by latitude, using Open-Meteo UV data.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **search_city** — Find a city and its coordinates, in any of the app's six languages
- **get_sun_times** — Sunrise, sunset, solar noon, civil dawn/dusk, both golden hours, day length
- **get_vitamin_d_window** — The synthesis window for one day: minutes needed, best hour, UV peak
- **get_vitamin_d_year** — The whole year in one call: which months work, which don't
- **get_current_status** — Whether *right now* is a good moment, from live UV and cloud data
- **estimate_sun_session** — What a session produced — IU made, and minutes until burning

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "vitamind-mcp": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","vitamind-mcp"],
    "env": {
      "VITAMIND_MCP_URL": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `VITAMIND_MCP_URL` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What JaviMaligno/vitamind-mcp does

JaviMaligno/vitamind-mcp exposes Vitamin D Explorer through the Model Context Protocol. It helps an AI assistant answer location- and skin-type-specific questions about whether vitamin D synthesis is possible, how long exposure may take, which parts of the year are viable, and what a completed sun session may have produced.

The public interface includes six tools. `search_city` finds a city and its coordinates in any of the app's six supported languages. `get_sun_times` returns sunrise, sunset, solar noon, civil dawn and dusk, golden-hour times, and day length. `get_vitamin_d_window` calculates a day's synthesis window, required minutes, best hour, and UV peak. `get_vitamin_d_year` identifies months when synthesis is possible or unavailable. `get_current_status` evaluates current conditions using live UV and cloud data, while `estimate_sun_session` estimates vitamin D made and time remaining before burning.

These capabilities place JaviMaligno/vitamind-mcp in the Biology, Medicine and Bioinformatics category. The estimates are intended for healthy skin and should not be used as medical advice or to plan intentional burning.

## How it works

The package is a stdio-to-HTTP relay. It forwards JSON-RPC messages between the MCP client and the hosted endpoint, while the vitamin D calculations remain on the hosted service. This means the local package does not contain a second calculation engine and can expose newly available hosted tools without requiring a package release.

The hosted calculations combine solar geometry based on NOAA formulas, a clear-sky UV model using seasonal and geographic ozone estimates, and an altitude adjustment. Live weather inputs come from Open-Meteo UV and cloud data. Vitamin D estimates use Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI, a Holick age factor, and a minimum UV index of 3 for synthesis. Session estimates account for saturation after roughly one-third of a minimal erythema dose, when additional production is limited and burn risk increases.

## Setup and configuration

Most MCP clients can connect to the hosted service directly through the connection instructions at `getvitamind.app/connect`. For clients that only launch local processes, configure the package with `npx`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "vitamind": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "vitamind-mcp"]
    }
  }
}
```

No API key or account is required for the six public tools. JaviMaligno/vitamind-mcp accepts `--url <endpoint>` to change the bridged endpoint. The same setting can be supplied through `VITAMIND_MCP_URL`; the default is `https://getvitamind.app/api/mcp/mcp`.

Four additional tools read or write account data: `get_my_profile`, `get_my_cities`, `get_my_history`, and `log_sun_session`. They require OAuth, which this bridge does not implement. Account access must use the account endpoint directly or an `mcp-remote` connection to `https://getvitamind.app/api/mcp-auth/mcp`.

## Limitations and notes

Results can reflect clear-sky or forecast conditions and do not model aerosols, ground reflectance, sunscreen, or individual variation. A result below the UV index threshold is reported as no synthesis rather than as a smaller amount. The project explicitly describes its output as estimates, not professional medical guidance. Do not use it to plan an intentional sunburn.
