## Description
Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server for reading from Google Drive and editing Google Sheets.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **Description** — Search for files in Google Drive.
- **Output** — Returns file names and MIME types of matching files.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "mcp-gdrive": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@isaacphi/mcp-gdrive"],
    "env": {
      "GDRIVE_CREDS_DIR": "",
      "CLIENT_ID": "",
      "CLIENT_SECRET": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `GDRIVE_CREDS_DIR`, `CLIENT_ID`, `CLIENT_SECRET` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What isaacphi/mcp-gdrive MCP server does

The isaacphi/mcp-gdrive MCP server exposes Google Drive and Google Sheets operations through MCP. It supports finding files, reading file contents, reading spreadsheet data, and changing a cell value. The available operations are useful for agents that need to locate documents before inspecting them or work with structured data stored in Sheets.

Drive files are also available as MCP resources using the `gdrive:///<file_id>` URI pattern. Workspace files are converted when accessed: Google Docs become Markdown, Sheets become CSV, Presentations become plain text, and Drawings become PNG images. Other files are returned in their native format.

## How it works

The server uses Google OAuth authentication. A Google Cloud project must have the Drive API enabled, and the setup also requires the Sheets API and Docs API for Sheets and Docs interaction. The configured OAuth client is used to authorize an account, and the resulting token is stored in the configured credentials directory.

Its four tools accept focused inputs. `gdrive_search` takes a search string and optional pagination settings, with a maximum page size of 100, and returns matching file names and MIME types. `gdrive_read_file` reads a file by ID. `gsheets_read` can read a full sheet or selected A1 ranges, with an optional sheet ID. `gsheets_update_cell` writes a string value to an A1-style cell range.

## Setup and configuration

To configure the isaacphi/mcp-gdrive MCP server, create a Google Cloud project, enable the required APIs, configure an OAuth consent screen, and create a Desktop App OAuth client. The OAuth scopes listed by the project are Drive read-only access and Sheets access. Download the client key file, rename it to `gcp-oauth.keys.json`, and place it in the directory selected by `GDRIVE_CREDS_DIR`.

The server expects these environment variables:

- `GDRIVE_CREDS_DIR`: Directory containing the OAuth key file and saved token.
- `CLIENT_ID`: Google OAuth client ID.
- `CLIENT_SECRET`: Google OAuth client secret.

Build the project with `npm run build` or `npm run watch`. Running `node ./dist/index.js` starts the browser-based authentication flow. The authenticated account must belong to the same organization as the Google Cloud project. A desktop MCP client can launch the package with `npx -y @isaacphi/mcp-gdrive` and pass the three variables in its server configuration.

## Tools and capabilities

- Search Drive files with optional pagination.
- Read file contents by Google Drive file ID.
- Read complete spreadsheets or selected A1 ranges.
- Select a spreadsheet tab by numeric sheet ID when reading.
- Update a specified spreadsheet cell or range with a string value.
- Access Drive files as MCP resources with Workspace format conversion.

## Limitations and notes

The server requires Google Cloud and OAuth setup before use. Drive search returns file names and MIME types rather than full file contents; reading requires a separate file ID. Spreadsheet updates accept a string value and target an A1-notation range. The documented OAuth configuration includes `drive.readonly`, so the write operation applies to Sheets through the separately configured Sheets scope rather than general Drive file writes.

The project is licensed under the MIT License. Its desktop configuration uses a local process launched with `npx`, and the OAuth token is persisted under the credentials directory supplied by the user.
