## Description
Look up IP address geolocation, network information, detect proxies and VPNs, and find abuse contact details using IPLocate.io

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **lookup_ip_address_details** — Get comprehensive information about an IP address including geolocation, network details, privacy/security information, company data, and abuse contacts. Can look up any IPv4 or IPv6 address, or your own IP if no address is provided.
- **lookup_ip_address_location** — Get geographic location information for an IP address including country, city, coordinates, timezone, and postal code. Can look up any IPv4 or IPv6 address, or your own IP if no address is provided.
- **lookup_ip_address_privacy** — Get privacy and security information for an IP address including VPN, proxy, Tor, hosting, and abuse detection. Can look up any IPv4 or IPv6 address, or your own IP if no address is provided.
- **lookup_ip_address_network** — Get network and ASN (Autonomous System Number) information for an IP address including the network operator, route, and regional registry. Can look up any IPv4 or IPv6 address, or your own IP if no address is provided.
- **lookup_ip_address_company** — Get company/organization information for an IP address including the company name, domain, and type of organization. Can look up any IPv4 or IPv6 address, or your own IP if no address is provided.
- **lookup_ip_address_abuse_contacts** — Get abuse contact information for an IP address to report malicious activity. Includes email, phone, and address of the network administrator. Can look up any IPv4 or IPv6 address, or your own IP if no address is provided.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "mcp-server-iplocate": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@iplocate/mcp-server"],
    "env": {
      "IPLOCATE_API_KEY": ""
    }
  }
}
```

**Requires environment variables:** `IPLOCATE_API_KEY` — the values above are empty placeholders; fill in real credentials before running (see the repository for what each one is for).

## Documentation

## What iplocate/mcp-server-iplocate MCP server does

iplocate/mcp-server-iplocate MCP server exposes IPLocate.io IP intelligence through MCP tools. It accepts IPv4 or IPv6 addresses and can also query the caller's own address when the optional `ip` parameter is left out.

The returned information covers several investigation areas:

- Geographic data such as country, city, coordinates, timezone, and postal code
- Network and ASN details, including the operator, route, network range, ISP, and regional registry
- Privacy and security indicators for VPNs, proxies, Tor exit nodes, hosting providers, and abuse detection
- Company or organization details, including name, domain, country, and organization type
- Abuse contacts, including email, phone, address, and network range

## How it works

The server communicates with the MCP client over standard input and output when launched with the published npm package. A client sends a tool request containing an optional IP address, and the server retrieves the corresponding information from the IPLocate API.

The package can be started with `npx -y @iplocate/mcp-server`, installed globally from npm, or built from the source repository with Yarn. Node.js 18 or newer is required. The repository also documents use with the MCP Inspector for testing.

The API key is optional for limited use. An IPLocate.io account can provide a free API key and a higher stated quota of 1,000 requests per day.

## Setup and configuration

Configure `IPLOCATE_API_KEY` in the MCP client's server environment when using an API key. The documented stdio configuration uses `npx` as the command and `-y @iplocate/mcp-server` as its arguments.

The README provides setup instructions for Cursor, Claude Desktop, and VS Code Preview. Cursor supports a one-click installation link as well as a project-level `.cursor/mcp.json` file. Claude Desktop uses its Developer settings and MCP configuration. VS Code Preview uses `.vscode/mcp.json` with a server type of `stdio`.

For manual use, set `IPLOCATE_API_KEY` in the shell environment before starting the package. The repository also supports installing the package globally or cloning, building, and starting the source project.

## Tools and capabilities

The six tools separate common IP research tasks:

- `lookup_ip_address_details` returns comprehensive information across the available categories.
- `lookup_ip_address_location` focuses on geographic attributes.
- `lookup_ip_address_privacy` reports VPN, proxy, Tor, hosting, and abuse-related signals.
- `lookup_ip_address_network` returns ASN, network, ISP, route, and registry data.
- `lookup_ip_address_company` identifies the associated company or organization.
- `lookup_ip_address_abuse_contacts` returns contact information for reporting malicious activity.

iplocate/mcp-server-iplocate also includes prompts for checking IP security, locating an IP geographically, investigating ownership, and comparing two IP addresses. These prompts provide predefined workflows on top of the lookup capabilities.

## Limitations and notes

Results depend on the data returned by the IPLocate API. The server requires a compatible MCP client and Node.js 18 or newer for the documented setup. Without an API key, usage is limited to the stated daily allowance; higher quota requires an IPLocate.io account and API key. The project is licensed under MIT.
