## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What Iowa Code does

The Iowa Code MCP server gives an MCP client access to Iowa Code material published by the Iowa Legislature. It supports statute retrieval by citation, historical editions, amendment history, cross-references, title and chapter navigation, and topic lookup based on official captions.

Citations use a chapter.section format such as `714.2` or `321J.2`. Chapter identifiers can contain letters, so callers should not assume that the chapter portion is numeric. The data is relevant to legal research and other workflows in the ⚖️ Legal category, but the server is an unofficial integration and should not be treated as an official legislative publication.

## How it works

`ia_code_section(section, year?)` retrieves the requested section and can target a historical Code edition. The response separates the statute text from its amendment history and `referred_to_in` cross-references. Available archived editions begin with 2000 and continue through the current edition, with gaps for 2001–2003 because those years are absent from the source site's year picker.

`ia_code_titles()` returns the Code's 16 titles, their official names, and chapter ranges. This can help an agent narrow a subject to a relevant part of the Code before requesting a section.

`ia_code_search(query, limit?)` searches official chapter and section captions. It does not search the full text of statutes. Results can therefore miss a relevant provision when the user's wording differs from the Legislature's caption terminology.

The Iowa Code MCP server reads plain RTF chapter files from `legis.iowa.gov` for statute text and uses the Legislature's chapter and section listing pages for captions. The implementation uses an RTF-to-text reader for these files.

## Setup and configuration

The package can run as a local stdio server with:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "iowa-code": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-iowa-code"]
    }
  }
}
```

This mode requires no Pipeworx account and exposes only the Iowa Code tools. The package can also be added through the keyless Pipeworx MCP endpoint at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/iowa-code/mcp`, or accessed directly through the gateway's HTTP tools API. The gateway endpoint adds shared Pipeworx tools, including routing and discovery tools, so its tool list is larger than the local package's list.

## Tools and capabilities

- Retrieve a section by citation and optional historical year.
- Return statute text, amendment history, and incoming references as separate fields.
- List Iowa Code titles with official names and chapter ranges.
- Search chapter and section captions by keyword or topic.
- Use either local stdio MCP or the keyless hosted gateway.

## Limitations and notes

Caption search is not a general subject index and does not inspect statutory text. A plain-language phrase may not match the official caption vocabulary and can produce an irrelevant higher-ranked result. The source material is served without a login, JavaScript, or a required API key, but the repository describes the integration as independent and unofficial. Verify legal conclusions against authoritative sources before relying on them.
