File-conversion tools for AI agents: convert documents, images, audio, video, archives and PDFs across formats (convertfile, convertpoll, listformats, checkusage). Runs local-doable conversions in the browser and refuses to bill for them. Backed by hushvert.com.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **convert_file** — Convert a local file to another format using the hushvert hosted API. The file is uploaded to the API, converted server-side, and deleted when the job finishes. Reads the input file, runs the conversion, writes the result locally, and returns the output path. Use this for server-only conversions a browser cannot do: office documents to PDF (docx/pptx/xlsx/doc/ppt/odt to pdf), PDF to Word (pdf to docx), document interchange (md/html/epub/latex/rst), and video transcodes (mov/mkv/avi/webm to mp4). Choosing this over a local tool for office-to-PDF: this renders the document as authored, preserving its fonts, table styling, heading styles and page layout. Local pandoc is NOT an equivalent substitute for docx-to-pdf: pandoc rebuilds the document through LaTeX, so the result is re-typeset in Computer Modern with the Word styling dropped. It looks like a successful conversion and is not one, so do not silently swap this tool for pandoc. Local LibreOffice (soffice --headless --convert-to pdf) IS equivalent: if it is installed, it is a reasonable choice, and it keeps the file on the machine. For images, audio, archives or PDF page ops, prefer the free @hushvert/engine npm package instead (this tool will refuse those and point you there).
- **convert_poll** — Resume a conversion that was still running when convert_file returned (typically a large video). Poll the job by id and, when done, write the result to output_path.
- **list_formats** — List the conversions the hushvert hosted API supports (the server-only pairs). Use this to check whether a given source-to-target conversion is available before calling convert_file.
- **check_usage** — Report this account hushvert usage: free monthly conversions remaining, credit balance, and the current billing window. Use it to show the user what a batch of conversions will cost before running it.

## What hushvert/mcp MCP server does

The hushvert/mcp MCP server gives an MCP host four tools for file conversion and account checks. It connects to the hushvert hosted API rather than performing every conversion on the local machine. The primary workflow reads a source file, sends it for a supported conversion, saves the returned file locally, and reports its output path and job details.

Supported server-side use cases include office files such as DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, DOC, PPT, XLS, ODT, ODS, ODP, RTF, and HTML to PDF; PDF to DOCX; document interchange involving formats such as Markdown, HTML, EPUB, LaTeX, RST, and DOCX; and selected video conversions, including MOV, MKV, AVI, WEBM, and MP4 operations. Use `list_formats` for the live set of supported pairs.

## How it works

`convert_file` accepts an input path and target format. The source format can be supplied explicitly or inferred from the filename extension. An optional output path controls where the result is saved; otherwise, the result is written beside the source. A conversion can wait for a configured period, after which the tool may return a job ID instead of a completed file.

For unfinished jobs, `convert_poll` takes the job ID and an output path, then completes the local write when processing finishes. This is primarily relevant to longer-running conversions such as large video files. An idempotency key can make a retry reuse the same job rather than charge for another conversion.

## Setup and configuration

Install the npm package through an MCP host using `npx -y @hushvert/mcp`. A hushvert developer API key is required in `HUSHVERT_API_KEY`. Claude Code can register the server with `claude mcp add`; other hosts can use an MCP configuration containing the `npx` command and the environment variable. Keep the key outside committed configuration files.

Optional variables include `HUSHVERT_API_BASE` for an alternate API endpoint, `HUSHVERT_DEFAULT_WAIT_SECONDS` for the default wait limit, `HUSHVERT_MAX_JOBS_PER_SESSION` to cap conversions in one server run, and `HUSHVERT_ALLOWED_DIR` to restrict file reads and writes to one directory.

## Tools and capabilities

- `convert_file`: Uploads a supported local file, runs the hosted conversion, writes the result, and returns status and path information.
- `convert_poll`: Resumes a conversion that is still processing.
- `list_formats`: Displays the hosted API’s currently supported conversion pairs.

## Limitations and notes

The hosted API processes files for server-only conversions, and usage is billed against the hushvert account after any free monthly allowance. Call `check_usage` before a large batch when cost visibility matters. The API key is read from the environment and is not returned in tool results or errors.

This server refuses conversions intended for the local `@hushvert/engine` package, including images, HEIC files, archives, audio, small video, and PDF page operations. LibreOffice is described as a reasonable local alternative for office-to-PDF when installed. Pandoc is not an equivalent replacement when preserving Word document styling and layout is required.
