## What hostinger-ssh-mcp does

The hostinger-ssh-mcp MCP server gives Claude Code an SSH connection to a remote Hostinger VPS. It is also described as working with any Linux VPS that provides SSH access, so the package is not limited to Hostinger infrastructure.

Once configured, commands can be requested in the Claude Code chat panel in VS Code. Example tasks include checking available disk space, listing running Python processes, and reading the most recent lines from a log file. The remote work is performed through SSH rather than on the local development machine.

## How it works

The package runs as an MCP server and is registered with Claude Code using the `claude mcp add` command. Claude Code then discovers the server under the configured name and can use its `run_command` capability to send shell commands to the VPS.

The connection requires a host address, a VPS username, and a password. These values are read from environment variables in a `.env` file located in the package directory. After registration, `claude mcp list` can be used to check whether Claude Code reports the server as connected.

## Setup and configuration

Install Node.js 18 or newer, Claude Code, and access to a Hostinger VPS or another Linux VPS over SSH. Install the package globally with npm:

Create a `.env` file in the package directory with `VPS_HOST`, `VPS_USER`, and `VPS_PASS`. The host value should identify the VPS, while the other two values provide the SSH login credentials.

Register the hostinger-ssh-mcp MCP server with Claude Code using:

Run `claude mcp list` to verify the connection. The expected result is a connected `hostinger-vps` entry. Keep the `.env` file out of source control; the package includes a `.gitignore` rule that excludes it.

## Tools and capabilities

The documented capability is `run_command`. It can be used to:

- Execute shell commands on the remote VPS.
- Inspect disk space and running processes.
- Read recent lines from files such as application logs.
- Perform other tasks available through the VPS shell.
