## What haomingkoo/japan-seasons-mcp does

haomingkoo/japan-seasons-mcp gives MCP-capable AI clients access to current and curated Japan travel-season information. Its coverage includes cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, Kawazu cherry, plum blossoms, wisteria, iris, hydrangea, lavender, sunflower and cosmos fields, fruit picking, fireworks and summer festivals, and winter events.

The dataset spans more than 1,700 GPS-tagged seasonal locations and includes 1,012 sakura parks and temples, 687 autumn-leaf viewing locations, and more than 2,100 fruit-picking farms across 14 fruits. Cherry blossom and autumn-leaf information comes from Japan Meteorological Corporation, while other categories use curated data or Jalan farm listings.

## How it works

The server exposes 17 MCP tools. Broad questions can be sent to `japan_seasonal_answer`, which selects an appropriate live or curated dataset and produces a travel recommendation. `sakura_now` and `koyo_now` summarize current conditions, upcoming timing, and matches for a user's travel dates. `sakura_forecast` returns information for all 48 JMA observation cities, including forecast or observed dates and comparison with historical averages. `sakura_spots` provides specific viewing locations.

The `search` and `fetch` tools support retrieval-oriented workflows. Search returns result identifiers, while fetch returns full text and a canonical URL for citation-oriented use.

Sakura forecast information is updated daily at 9 AM Japan Standard Time, and individual spot observations change when JMC reporters submit updates. The service also provides a public map, text summary, and JSON forecast endpoints for web-retrieval workflows.

## Setup and configuration

For a client that supports remote or streamable HTTP MCP, use:

For a local stdio setup, add a server entry that runs `npx -y japan-seasons-mcp`. The package can also be started locally in HTTP mode:

The local MCP endpoint is then available at `http://localhost:3000/mcp`. Optional connection preferences include `dateStyle` (`friendly` or `iso`), `temperatureUnit` (`celsius` or `fahrenheit`), `includeCoordinates` (`true` or `false`), and `mapLanguage` (`english` or `japanese`).

For a persistent hosted-map cache, set `JAPAN_SEASONS_CACHE_DIR` to a durable directory. Without that setting, the application uses an in-memory cache and continues to work.

## Limitations and notes

MCP tool access requires the endpoint or local process to be configured in an MCP-capable client. Finding the project through web search does not grant permission to run its tools. Web-enabled assistants can instead use the public sakura text summary, forecast JSON endpoint, and interactive pages for retrieval and citations.

The service combines live JMC data with curated seasonal listings and Jalan fruit-farm data, so coverage and update behavior differ by category. Weather information can also affect recommendations, such as rain increasing petal fall during a blossom-viewing window.
