## What gortex MCP server does

gortex turns source code into a persistent, provenance-tiered graph of symbols, relationships, call chains, HTTP routes, and cross-service contracts. The graph can cover multiple repositories, allowing agents to trace references and contracts across repository boundaries. Parsing uses tree-sitter grammars for 257 languages, with additional compiler-grade resolution for languages including Python, JavaScript and TypeScript, Go, Rust, Java, C#, C/C++, PHP, Kotlin, Swift, Ruby, Elixir, and others.

The MCP interface is intended for coding agents and IDE workflows. Its catalog includes more than 100 tools, 16 resources, and three prompts, with the available MCP tool set configurable so an agent receives only the capabilities it needs.

## How it works

A long-running daemon maintains the graph in an on-disk SQLite store and updates it incrementally as files change. One daemon can serve multiple IDE windows. A depth-three reach index supports impact and blast-radius lookups, while evidence-gated resolution provides confidence information for cross-repository relationships.

Agents can query symbols, callers, callees, dataflow, clones, contracts, and likely change impact instead of loading entire files. gortex also supports speculative workflows: previewing an edit or simulating a chain of edits without writing to disk. Unsaved editor buffers can be exposed through live overlays, including separate branches for parallel speculative sessions.

Semantic search is enabled by default through embedded GloVe vectors and local FTS5/BM25 search with adaptive fusion. MiniLM, Ollama, and OpenAI are available as optional semantic-search choices. The HTTP server provides a versioned API, MCP Streamable HTTP, and a separate web UI for graph visualization.

## Setup and configuration

Install the single binary with the macOS/Linux shell installer or the Windows PowerShell installer. The installer detects the operating system and architecture, verifies SHA256 and cosign signatures, and places the executable on PATH.

A typical setup is:

`gortex install` performs machine-level setup for MCP, skills, and slash commands. `gortex track` adds a repository to the graph, while `gortex init` creates repository-level MCP configuration and hooks. The project supports macOS, Linux, and Windows, and can also be installed through Homebrew, distribution packages, Scoop, signed binaries, or a source build.

Telemetry is opt-in and can be controlled with `gortex telemetry on|off|status`. When enabled, the documented telemetry scope is anonymous tool and command counts; code, paths, names, and exact counts are excluded. The `DO_NOT_TRACK` setting is honored.
