## Description
Searchable access to GitLab documentation from multiple repositories with full-text search.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **search_docs**
- **get_doc**
- **search_and_fetch**

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Remote MCP endpoint (confidence: high). Install path detected from listing signals. Add as a URL/SSE server in your client:

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "gitlab-documentation-mcp-server": {
    "url": "http://127.0.0.1:8000/mcp"
  }
}
## Documentation
## What GitLab Documentation MCP Server MCP server does
GitLab Documentation MCP Server MCP server makes GitLab's official documentation available to MCP-compatible AI clients. The indexed material comes from several GitLab open-source repositories, including GitLab CE/EE, GitLab Runner, Omnibus GitLab, Gitaly, GitLab Pages, and GitLab Agent documentation. This coverage supports questions about the main GitLab application, CI/CD runners, installation packages, Git RPC, static sites, and Kubernetes-related tooling.
Documentation is selected when the image is built. You can build an image for a specific GitLab release, such as 18.7.2, or use the latest source. The repository versioning strategy uses the full GitLab version for the main repository and related version conventions for the other repositories.
## How it works
The Docker build uses sparse checkout to obtain the relevant documentation folders while limiting the checked-out content. Markdown files are parsed into an SQLite database with an FTS5 full-text search index. At runtime, the MCP server queries that local index rather than fetching documentation for every request.
The server supports stdio for local process-based configurations and can also run with streamable HTTP by setting the transport, host, and port configuration used by the project. Docker examples invoke the server interactively with standard input, while local development can run the Python module directly.
## Setup and configuration
Docker must be installed and running, and the client must support MCP. Published image tags include version-specific and latest variants. Select a tag that matches the GitLab deployment being documented; for example, use an 18.7 tag for an 18.7.x environment or the latest tag for current documentation.
Claude Desktop, Cline, and Cursor can launch the container with a configuration that calls `docker run -i --rm` and supplies the selected image tag. After adding the configuration, restart or reload the client as appropriate. To verify the setup, initialize the container, list its tools, or ask the connected assistant to search for a known GitLab topic. Docker connectivity and valid JSON configuration are the first checks if the server does not appear.
## Tools and capabilities
GitLab Documentation MCP Server MCP server exposes three MCP tools:
- `search_docs` performs full-text searches across the indexed documentation and returns matching paths, titles, and repository identifiers.
- `get_doc` retrieves a document using its exact path, typically obtained from search results.
- `search_and_fetch` combines searching with retrieval and returns the full Markdown for each matching document.
The server also provides `docs://repos`, which lists indexed repository keys, and `docs://{+path}`, which exposes the full Markdown for an indexed document path. These resources complement the tools when a client supports MCP resource access.
The indexed content can be searched for subjects such as GitLab Runner with Docker, CI/CD pipeline syntax, backup and restore, GitLab Pages custom domains, or release and upgrade notes.
## Limitations and notes
The documentation available to the client depends on the image that was built and the version tag selected. A version-specific image may contain documentation from different repository tags: the main GitLab repository uses the requested full version, while several related repositories use the first stable release for the matching major and minor version.
This server indexes documentation from GitLab's open-source repositories; it is not described as a live GitLab API connection. It therefore does not provide current instance state, project data, or authenticated GitLab operations. Documentation repository licenses may differ, even though the server project itself is released under the MIT License.
