## What FreeCAD MCP does

FreeCAD MCP lets an AI agent work with FreeCAD documents and operations through the AICopilot workbench. It is intended for interactive design work as well as repeatable engineering workflows: creating and revising parametric parts, inspecting model state, working with meshes, checking geometry, preparing CNC operations, and exporting manufacturing files.

The agent can help translate design requirements into FreeCAD actions, identify underspecified decisions, and iterate on an existing part. It can also inspect the Report View, examine sketch constraints, investigate broken external references, and explain modeling failures. Example workflows include generating a parametric shingles model from spreadsheet parameters, adding mounting features to an imported STL, checking possible part collisions, and producing STEP or CNC output.

## How it works

FreeCAD must run with the AICopilot workbench loaded. The workbench starts a socket server, and the MCP bridge connects the agent to that FreeCAD process. The Report View provides visible startup and diagnostic status, including whether the workbench loaded and whether the socket is listening.

Multiple FreeCAD processes can be active at once. Each process receives a UUID, creates a Unix socket, and writes a discovery record under the user cache directory. The bridge scans those records to find live instances. With one live process it selects automatically; with several, the agent can list instances and select one by UUID or label. Instances may also be spawned from the agent using a chosen FreeCAD binary, with either a GUI or headless process.

## Setup and configuration

Installation involves cloning the project, installing the FreeCAD addon, and registering the MCP server according to the project’s agent installation instructions. The implementation supports macOS, Windows, and Linux, with development performed on macOS.

FreeCAD 1.1.x supports the non-CAM tools. CAM toolpath generation depends on a current weekly development build because the Path workbench API differs between the stable and development series.

Two optional launch variables control instance discovery:

- `FREECAD_MCP_LABEL` assigns a readable instance name instead of using its UUID.
- `FREECAD_MCP_SOCKET` replaces the default socket path, which is useful for CI or scripted launches.

## Tools and capabilities

The project provides more than 30 tools covering areas such as:

- Part and PartDesign modeling
- Sketch inspection and constraint troubleshooting
- Draft, Boolean, transform, and measurement operations
- Mesh import and modification workflows
- Geometry validation and manufacturing checks
- CAM toolpath planning and G-code generation
- Document and Report View inspection
- Macro creation for parameterized, repeatable workflows
- FreeCAD instance discovery, selection, and spawning
- Export to formats such as STEP

The test suite includes unit coverage that does not require FreeCAD and integration coverage requiring a running FreeCAD process with AICopilot loaded.

## Limitations and notes

CAM support is tied to the FreeCAD weekly development API rather than the 1.1.x stable line. Platform support is strongest on macOS, Windows, and Linux; other platforms may work but receive less testing. The bridge can connect to multiple instances, but when more than one is live an explicit selection is needed before ordinary operations can proceed.
