## What font-proof-mcp MCP server does

font-proof-mcp MCP server exposes Hellbox document operations to MCP-compatible AI clients. Hellbox, formerly known as Font Proof, is a macOS application for type designers that produces PDF font proofs and can live-reload font data from Glyphs and RoboFont. Through the server, an AI tool can create new `.fontproof` files, inspect existing documents, open them in Hellbox, and make structured changes.

The package is useful for workflows where proof documents need to be assembled or revised through instructions rather than edited manually. It can manage document sections, populate section content, adjust section settings, and control the fonts used in a proof. Font operations include system fonts and variable font axes, along with fonts available through Glyphs 3.

## How it works

font-proof-mcp MCP server is a thin npm launcher rather than an independent implementation of the document format. When started, it locates the `font-proof-mcp` Swift binary inside the installed Hellbox application and passes MCP traffic to that binary over standard input and output. The embedded binary is codesigned with Hellbox and is kept in step with the app’s document format.

Because the server uses the binary shipped with Hellbox, the available behavior corresponds to the Hellbox version installed on the Mac. Hellbox does not have to be open for the MCP server to create or edit files. The app is relevant when a user wants to open a proof, view it, or use its live font-reloading workflow.

## Setup and configuration

The supported platform is macOS 12 or later. Hellbox must be installed because the server executable is distributed inside the app bundle, and Node.js 18 or newer is required to run the `npx` launcher.

Hellbox provides a client installer under Preferences, then AI Integration. Manual configuration uses the package command `npx -y font-proof-mcp`. Claude Code can register it with `claude mcp add font-proof -- npx -y font-proof-mcp`; Claude Desktop and Cursor use an MCP configuration entry with `command` set to `npx` and `args` set to `["-y", "font-proof-mcp"]`.

If Hellbox is not installed in `/Applications` or `~/Applications`, set `FONT_PROOF_MCP_PATH` to the full path of `Hellbox.app/Contents/Helpers/font-proof-mcp`.

## Tools and capabilities

The document tools are `create_proof`, `create_complete_proof`, `open_proof`, `get_proof_info`, and `open_in_app`. Section editing is covered by `add_section`, `update_section`, `delete_section`, `reorder_sections`, `duplicate_section`, `set_section_content_bulk`, and `update_section_settings`.

Font management includes `add_fonts`, `remove_fonts`, and `list_system_fonts`, with support for variable font axes. For Glyphs 3 workflows, `list_glyphs_fonts` discovers available fonts and `add_glyphs_fonts` adds them to a proof.

## Limitations and notes

This package targets macOS and depends on an installed Hellbox application. It does not duplicate the server logic or include a separate document-format implementation. The npm package and MCP server retain the `font-proof-mcp` name from the Font Proof era, while Hellbox is the current application name. The `.fontproof` file extension remains unchanged.
