## What fmp MCP server does

The fmp MCP server gives an MCP-compatible client access to Financial Modeling Prep data through focused tools. It covers current quotes, company profiles, income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, key metrics, and financial ratios. It also provides broader market views, including gainers, losers, most-active stocks, sector performance, S&P 500 constituents, and stock news.

The server is suited to research workflows that need financial data returned through agent tools rather than manual API requests. It can support questions about a company’s reported fundamentals, analyst expectations, ownership, recent market activity, and selected technical indicators.

## How it works

The client sends a tool request containing a ticker, query, date, period, limit, interval, or timeframe, depending on the operation. The server calls the corresponding Financial Modeling Prep API endpoint and returns the requested data to the MCP client.

Ticker-based tools accept symbols such as AAPL, TSLA, or MSFT. Financial statement and metrics tools can request annual or quarterly periods and limit the number of returned periods. Historical chart requests support configurable intervals, while RSI, SMA, and EMA requests support timeframes ranging from one minute through one day.

Available data also includes analyst estimates, price targets, ratings and rating changes, insider transactions, institutional holders, economic indicators, economic releases, earnings dates, and company news. The fmp MCP server therefore combines company-level, market-level, macroeconomic, and technical data behind one MCP connection.

## Setup and configuration

Running the fmp MCP server requires Node.js 18 or newer and an API key from Financial Modeling Prep. Configure the package with `npx` and provide the key through the `FMP_API_KEY` environment variable.

For Claude Desktop, add an MCP server entry to `claude_desktop_config.json`, using `npx -y @houtini/fmp-mcp` as the command and setting `FMP_API_KEY` in the entry’s environment. The configuration file is located under the Claude application support directory on macOS and under the application data directory on Windows. Restart Claude Desktop after changing the file.

Claude Code uses its own registration command rather than the Claude Desktop configuration file. Register the package with `claude mcp add`, pass the API key with `-e FMP_API_KEY=...`, and verify the connection with `claude mcp get`.

## Limitations and notes

The server depends on the Financial Modeling Prep API, so an active API key is required for requests. The available data, request limits, and response behavior are governed by that upstream service. Tool parameters must use the formats supported by each operation, including annual or quarterly periods, `YYYY-MM-DD` dates, recognized chart intervals, and supported technical-indicator timeframes.

The package documentation specifically describes setup for Claude Desktop and Claude Code. Other MCP clients may require their own method for registering a standard command-based server.
