## Description
Search FCC radio licenses, find nearby licensed sites, and see who is licensed on a frequency.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **fcc_spectrum_search_licenses** — Search licenses and spectrum leases by callsign, licensee name, FRN, market code, radio service, status, or licensee state.
- **fcc_spectrum_get_license** — Read one license or lease in full by callsign or USI: licensee, status and dates, locations, antennas, frequencies with emissions, market blocks, and lease links.
- **fcc_spectrum_find_transmitters** — Find FCC-licensed sites within a radius of a coordinate, nearest first, with their filed roles and authorized frequencies.
- **fcc_spectrum_search_frequencies** — Find site assignments and market-area spectrum blocks whose occupied band overlaps a frequency or band.
- **fcc_spectrum_list_reference** — Decode ULS codes (radio services, station classes, statuses, location and antenna types, applicant types, operator classes) and report index coverage and freshness.

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `bunx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "fcc-spectrum-mcp-server": {
    "command": "bunx",
    "args": ["@cyanheads/fcc-spectrum-mcp-server@latest"]
  }
}
## Documentation
## What fcc-spectrum-mcp-server does
The fcc-spectrum-mcp-server MCP server makes FCC Universal Licensing System (ULS) licensing data available to MCP clients. It covers radio licenses and spectrum leases in the local index, including land mobile, microwave, cellular, market-area wireless, paging, coast stations, broadband radio, amateur, and broadcast auxiliary services. GMRS, ship, and aircraft records are opt-in.
The indexed data can identify licensees, callsigns, FCC Registration Numbers, market codes, authorization status, sites, antennas, frequencies, emissions, power, market blocks, and lease relationships. The index is built from the FCC's weekly and daily bulk files rather than queried from the FCC during each request.
Broadcast AM, FM, and TV stations, along with satellite earth stations, are outside the included FCC systems.
## How it works
fcc-spectrum-mcp-server MCP server can run as a local stdio process, a local Streamable HTTP service, or through the public endpoint at `https://fcc-spectrum.caseyjhand.com/mcp`. It does not require an API key. Search results support cursor paging, and detailed license records can be retrieved with a callsign or the returned USI.
Searches can begin with a callsign, licensee name, FRN, market code, radio service, status, or state. A license lookup returns the record in pages when it contains many locations, antennas, leases, or frequencies. Nearby-site queries accept decimal or DMS coordinates and sort results by distance. Frequency searches compare a requested frequency or band with occupied site bandwidths or filed market-block edges.
The server also provides a `fcc-spectrum://license/{callsign}` JSON resource corresponding to the first page of a license lookup.
## Tools and capabilities
- `fcc_spectrum_search_licenses` finds licenses and leases using identity, service, status, market, and state filters.
- `fcc_spectrum_get_license` returns authorization details, including locations, antennas, frequencies and emissions, market blocks, lease links, dates, and licensee information.
- `fcc_spectrum_find_transmitters` locates licensed sites within 0.1 to 100 km of a coordinate. Filters can include frequency range, radio service, location type, FCC location class, and status.
- `fcc_spectrum_search_frequencies` returns site assignments, market blocks, or both for an overlapping frequency range. Results can be narrowed by license, service, state, FRN, market, or status.
- `fcc_spectrum_list_reference` decodes ULS values such as service, station class, status, location, antenna, applicant, and operator codes, and reports index coverage and freshness.
## Setup and configuration
Install or launch the package as an MCP server using a compatible client. The repository documents installation paths for Claude Desktop, Cursor, and VS Code, and publishes a Docker image as well as an npm package. The server can also be configured against the hosted Streamable HTTP endpoint.
No environment variable or FCC credential is required for the documented operation. Local deployments use the packaged FCC bulk-file index; the available records and their freshness are exposed through the reference tool.
## Limitations and notes
Search limits and paging apply to the tools: license searches return up to 100 rows, transmitter searches up to 100 sites, and frequency searches up to 200 rows per request. Detailed records have separate budgets for sites, antennas, leases, and frequency rows, with offsets for retrieving subsequent pages.
A transmitter result describes filed authorization, not proof of current on-air activity. Mobile and temporary-fixed areas are represented by their filed center, so the reported distance is to that center. A missing license returns guidance and possible callsign-prefix candidates rather than an error, while records retaining no sites or frequencies are marked accordingly.
The default index does not include every FCC licensing system, and optional license categories must be enabled separately.
