## What fatenava-mcp does

The fatenava-mcp MCP server gives an AI agent one tool, `cast_chart`, for calculating three kinds of natal charts from birth information:

- BaZi, also called the Four Pillars of Destiny, including stems and branches, the Day Master, and Five-Elements distribution.
- Zi Wei Dou Shu, including the twelve palaces, major stars, Life Palace, and transformations.
- Western astrology using the tropical zodiac and Placidus houses, with the Ascendant, planets by sign and house, elements, and modalities.

The calculations come from FateNava’s free chart API. Results are structured rather than prose interpretations, so an agent can translate native Chinese terms, explain the fields, or build a downstream response. The same birth input produces the same chart data because the calculations are deterministic.

## How it works

The `cast_chart` tool supports two input styles. A one-line text value can contain the birth date, time, place, and gender, such as `1995-08-10 12:00 Taipei female`. The API parses the text, resolves a city name to coordinates and a time zone, and accepts city names in English, Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

Structured input instead supplies numeric date and time fields, gender, longitude, latitude, and an IANA time-zone identifier such as `Asia/Taipei`. An optional `systems` array limits the response to `bazi`, `ziwei`, or `astro`; if omitted, all three systems are returned.

BaZi applies a True Solar Time correction based on the birthplace longitude. If the exact birth hour is unknown, set `birthTimeKnown` to `false`. The service returns three BaZi pillars and omits calculations that depend on the missing hour instead of creating an estimated value.

## Setup and configuration

The fatenava-mcp MCP server runs over standard input and output. With Node.js and npm available, an MCP client can launch it with `npx -y fatenava-mcp`. Claude Code uses `claude mcp add fatenava -- npx -y fatenava-mcp`; Codex CLI can define the same command in its MCP server configuration; Cursor and other compatible clients can use a server entry with `command` set to `npx` and `args` set to `["-y", "fatenava-mcp"]`.

There is no account, API key, or required environment variable. `FATENAVA_API_BASE` is optional and changes the API origin, which is useful for testing. For local development, install dependencies with `npm install`, build with `npm run build`, and start `node dist/index.js`.

## Tools and capabilities

The server exposes one MCP tool:

- `cast_chart`: Calculates one or more of the supported chart systems from a single birth input.

Responses include the interpreted birth details, whether the time was known, and a `charts` object containing successful results for the selected systems. Field names are in English, while traditional stems, branches, palace names, and star names may appear in their original Chinese characters.

## Limitations and notes

The fatenava-mcp MCP server calculates chart data but does not provide a separate interpretation tool. An agent must explain the returned values, or users can use FateNava’s reading tools separately. Unknown birth times reduce the available output, particularly for hour-dependent calculations.

Its charts represent tendencies and themes rather than fixed outcomes, and the results are not medical, legal, or financial advice. The underlying endpoint is dependent on the configured API origin; `FATENAVA_API_BASE` can replace the default origin for testing.
