## Documentation

## What FaithFinder — Find a Church does

FaithFinder — Find a Church provides MCP tools for discovering Christian churches in the United States. Its packaged dataset covers more than 9,000 churches across all 50 states and Washington, DC. Assistants can search by city, state, ZIP code, denomination, worship style, theology, church size, and whether a church offers kids or youth ministry.

Search results can include a church website, latest sermon video, statement of faith, Google rating, and FaithFinder profile link. The service also supports questions about a specific church, including its beliefs, sermons, reviews, website, and similar nearby churches. Listings are intended for discovery; users should verify service times and other details with the church.

## How it works

The default package runs as an MCP server over standard input and output. It loads its directory data locally and searches it in memory, so the normal setup does not require an API key, account, or outbound network request. Queries are processed in memory, and the project states that it does not send telemetry or log queries off-machine.

The main tools are `find_churches`, `get_church_details`, `church_match_quiz`, and `list_church_coverage`. `find_churches` accepts natural-language requests as well as optional structured filters. If an exact location or filter combination is unavailable, it can relax filters and use nearby ZIP codes, reporting that fallback. `church_match_quiz` returns four questions, four church archetypes, and a link to the free Soul Signature quiz.

FaithFinder — Find a Church can also run in HTTP mode when `PORT` is set or the server is started with `--http`. That mode exposes a stateless Streamable HTTP MCP endpoint at `/mcp`, along with REST endpoints for church search, church details, quiz archetypes, health checks, and an OpenAPI document. The hosted endpoint is suitable for remote MCP clients and web applications.

## Setup and configuration

For local clients, install the npm package through `npx` with `faithfinder-mcp-server@latest`. Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Claude Code, and Gemini CLI each have configuration examples in the project documentation. VS Code and Cursor also provide installation links.

Remote use requires deploying the server and exposing its HTTPS `/mcp` endpoint. `PUBLIC_BASE_URL` supplies the public URL used in the generated OpenAPI specification. The project documents local startup with `PORT=8080` and deployment to Google Cloud Run. ChatGPT and Claude.ai use a hosted connector rather than invoking `npx` directly; Custom GPT Actions can import the generated OpenAPI document.

## Tools and capabilities

- Search churches using natural language or location and preference filters.
- Retrieve details for a named church or church identifier.
- Show covered states and cities with listing counts.
- Offer a short church-type matching flow for uncertain users.
- Provide OpenAI-compatible `search` and `fetch` tools for connector and deep-research use.
- Expose read-only resources covering the directory, coverage, theology, and worship styles.

All listed tools are read-only and have no side effects. The server also defines the `find_a_church` and `church_search_advisor` prompts. Its optional web build generates HTML directory and church pages, plus crawler-oriented files such as `llms.txt` and `sitemap.xml` from the same data.
