## Documentation

## What Explore Better does

Explore Better MCP server gives AI agents a local interface to a Windows file-management workspace. Its documented purpose is scoped discovery, disk analysis, and recoverable file operations. The surrounding application provides dual-pane browsing, path navigation, filtering, previews, search, indexing, duplicate finding, checksums, synchronization, and disk-space analysis.

The design is aimed at file work that benefits from visible scope and recovery context. Copy, move, rename, overwrite, sync, archive, recycle, and delete workflows are represented as operations rather than treated as opaque one-step commands. The application records progress and related events, and it can reconcile interrupted work after startup.

## How it works

Explore Better MCP server runs locally as part of the Windows application.

For filesystem browsing, local folders use native Win32 enumeration, with a Node-based fallback for unsupported paths and platforms. Large directories use progressive rendering, virtualized rows, cached metadata, and bounded background work. Search can use saved background-index roots, while the disk analyzer scans folder and file sizes into a hierarchical treemap.

File operations support conflict previews and policies such as rename, overwrite, and skip. Destination-volume staging and overwrite backups provide recovery context, while the queue exposes progress, transfer rate, estimated time, pause, resume, cancellation, retry, and undo metadata. Safeguards cover drive-root deletion, application-state deletion, recursive source/destination mistakes, and stale destructive previews.

## Setup and configuration

The supported environment is Windows 10 or Windows 11 on x64 hardware. Installation uses the latest GitHub release and the `ExploreBetter-<version>-x64-setup.exe` installer. The recommended process is to download `SHA256SUMS.txt`, calculate the installer SHA-256 hash in PowerShell, compare it with the published value, and then run the installer.

Installation is per-user by default. Normal browsing, the native filesystem helper, Disk Map, indexing, previews, and file operations do not require the main application to run as administrator; Windows may still request approval for protected locations.

The public preview is not Authenticode-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may show an unknown-publisher warning. The project advises downloading from the official GitHub release and checking the checksum rather than disabling SmartScreen or installing a root certificate.

Explorer integration is optional and reversible. The application can back up existing shell values, register handlers for folders, drives, folder backgrounds, and an “Open file location” action, or restore the previous handlers. It can also remain a standalone file manager.

## Tools and capabilities

Explore Better MCP server is suited to agents that need to:

- Discover files within an intentionally scoped Windows location.
- Examine disk usage through logical or allocated-size analysis.
- Search filenames and text content with filters for kind, size, timestamps, and attributes.
- Find duplicate files using same-size grouping and optional SHA-256 confirmation.
- Create or verify SHA-256, SHA-1, or MD5 checksum manifests.
- Compare and synchronize folders.
- Queue file changes with progress, cancellation, retry, undo metadata, and recovery handling.

## Limitations and notes

Explore Better MCP server is Windows-focused: the stated platform is Windows 10 or 11 x64. It also does not document the exact MCP tool schemas.

Explorer redirection is not universal. Programs that explicitly launch `explorer.exe` continue to use Windows Explorer, while normal folder-opening requests can use Explore Better when its optional integration is enabled. Administrator access is not generally required for normal use, but protected Windows locations may still require approval.
