## Description
Energy-Charts (Fraunhofer ISE) MCP — European electricity generation, prices, and capacity.

## Tools
Capabilities this server exposes over MCP:

- **generation_mix** — The CURRENT ELECTRICITY GENERATION MIX BY FUEL for a European country — how much power is coming from solar, wind, nuclear, gas, coal, hydro, biomass right now, with each fuel's MW and percentage share. Answers "what is Germany's generation mix", "how much of France's electricity is nuclear", "Germ…
- **public_power** — Electricity generation broken down by production type (solar, wind, nuclear, gas, etc.) for a country over a date range. Returns {unix_seconds, production_types:[{name, data}]}; each series' data array is timestamp-aligned to unix_seconds. Power in MW.
- **electricity_price** — Day-ahead spot electricity prices for a bidding zone over a date range. Returns {unix_seconds, price, unit}; the price array is timestamp-aligned to unix_seconds. Prices in EUR/MWh.
- **total_power** — Total electricity generation / load for a country over a date range. Returns {unix_seconds, production_types:[{name, data}]}; data arrays are timestamp-aligned to unix_seconds. Power in MW.
- **installed_power** — Installed generation capacity by production type for a country, as an annual or monthly series. Returns {time:["2002",...], production_types:[{name, data}]}; data arrays are aligned to the time array. Capacity in GW.
- **renewable_share** — Renewable share of a country's electricity LOAD, as a percent — how much of demand wind, solar, hydro and biomass are covering, now or over a past date range. Answers "what share of Germany's electricity is renewable right now", "how renewable was France's grid in July", "which days last month did…

## Claude Desktop Quick Installation
Install path detected from listing signals. Uses `npx` (confidence: high):

```json
"mcpServers": {
  "energy-charts": {
    "command": "npx",
    "args": ["-y","@pipeworx/mcp-energy-charts"]
  }
}
```

## Documentation

## What Energy Charts MCP server does

Energy Charts MCP server connects MCP clients to the Fraunhofer ISE Energy-Charts service through the Pipeworx gateway. It provides structured European electricity data without requiring an Energy-Charts API key. The integration is independent and unofficial; it is not affiliated with the upstream provider.

The service is suited to questions about how a country's electricity is being produced, how generation changes over time, what power costs in a bidding zone, how much capacity is installed, and what portion of electricity load is covered by renewables.

## How it works

A hosted MCP connection is available at `https://gateway.pipeworx.io/energy-charts/mcp`. The same gateway can also be accessed at its full endpoint, where all catalog packs are available. The scoped Energy Charts endpoint lists the pack's tools and shared Pipeworx meta-tools. `ask_pipeworx` can route natural-language questions across the wider catalog from either endpoint.

For local MCP deployments, the `@pipeworx/mcp-energy-charts` npm package runs as a stdio bridge. It forwards requests to the hosted gateway, so it requires network access and does not provide offline operation. The tools can also be called directly over HTTP through the gateway's `/v1/tools/` routes.

## Setup and configuration

Add the hosted endpoint to an MCP client such as Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Windsurf:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "energy-charts": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/energy-charts/mcp"
    }
  }
}
```

For a local stdio connection, configure the client to launch the package with `npx`:

```json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "energy-charts": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-energy-charts"]
    }
  }
}
```

Anonymous use is available with a daily call limit. A free Pipeworx account increases that limit; its key is supplied as `PIPEWORX_API_KEY`. Set `PIPEWORX_META_TOOLS=1` when the local package should also list the shared gateway tools. When running behind an HTTPS proxy, newer Node.js versions may require `NODE_USE_ENV_PROXY=1` for built-in `fetch` to honor proxy settings.

## Tools and capabilities

- `generation_mix` returns current fuel-level production in MW and percentage terms, along with renewable, fossil, and nuclear totals. Countries can be supplied by name or two-letter code.
- `public_power` returns historical generation by production type, with timestamp-aligned MW series.
- `electricity_price` returns day-ahead spot prices for a bidding zone in EUR/MWh over a selected range.
- `total_power` returns total generation or load as timestamp-aligned MW data.
- `installed_power` provides annual or monthly capacity by production type in GW.
- `renewable_share` reports renewable coverage of electricity load, including the latest measured value, timestamp, window statistics, daily results, and 15-minute readings for windows of three days or less. It accepts country names, two-letter codes, and `eu` or `all` for the EU aggregate.

## Limitations and notes

The npm bridge depends on the hosted gateway and cannot operate without network access. Anonymous calls are capped at 50 per day; a free account raises the limit to 200 per day. Renewable-share values describe measured settled data rather than forecasts and can exceed 100% when renewable generation exceeds domestic consumption and surplus power is exported. The project is licensed under MIT.
