## Documentation

## What Easy Digital Downloads MCP server does

The Easy Digital Downloads MCP server exposes read and diagnostic operations for an Easy Digital Downloads store through MCP. It wraps the EDD REST API, allowing a compatible AI client to retrieve store information without requiring custom API calls in each client workflow.

The available data covers the main areas of an EDD store. Product tools return catalog records with pricing and statistics, while sales tools support recent-sale queries and individual lookups. Customer tools provide customer records and purchase statistics. The server also exposes discount-code records, file download history, and aggregate sales information.

Analytics tools return overall earnings and sales totals, daily statistics for a selected date range, and product-level statistics. These operations can support questions such as reviewing current revenue, examining product performance, or finding a customer by email.

## How it works

The Easy Digital Downloads MCP server runs as an npm package and communicates with an MCP client over the configured server process. Requests are sent to the EDD REST API using the store URL, public API key, and API token supplied in the environment.

A connection-validation tool checks the configured URL and credentials before other queries are used. Tool inputs and outputs use Zod schema validation, according to the project documentation. The server is intended for retrieving data from an existing EDD installation; the listed tools do not describe product, sale, customer, discount, or settings mutation operations.

## Setup and configuration

Install the package globally with npm, or configure the client to run it through `npx`:

```bash
npm install -g @verygoodplugins/mcp-edd
```

Set these variables before starting the Easy Digital Downloads MCP server:

```bash
EDD_API_URL=https://your-store.com/edd-api/
EDD_API_KEY=your-api-public-key
EDD_API_TOKEN=your-api-token
```

They may be exported in the shell or placed in a `.env` file in the working directory. In WordPress, the API key and token are generated under Downloads → Settings → API. The API URL uses the store’s `/edd-api/` endpoint.

Claude Desktop users can install a release `.mcpb` file or add an MCP server entry that runs `npx -y @verygoodplugins/mcp-edd` and passes the three variables in its `env` object.

## Tools and capabilities

The Easy Digital Downloads MCP server provides the following tools:

- `edd_validate_connection` checks the store URL and credentials.
- `edd_list_products` and `edd_get_product` list products or retrieve one by ID, including pricing and statistics where available.
- `edd_list_sales` and `edd_get_sale` query recent sales or find a sale by ID or purchase key.
- `edd_list_customers` and `edd_get_customer` retrieve customers by listing or by customer ID or email. Customer results include purchase statistics; list results return the EDD customer ID as `id` and may include `userId`.
- `edd_get_stats`, `edd_get_stats_by_date`, and `edd_get_stats_by_product` return total, daily, or product-specific sales and earnings data.
- `edd_list_discounts` and `edd_get_discount` retrieve discount codes and individual discount details.
- `edd_get_download_logs` returns file download history.

## Limitations and notes

The Easy Digital Downloads MCP server depends on an accessible EDD REST API and valid credentials from the target WordPress store. Integration tests require credentials. Detailed endpoint behavior is governed by the EDD REST API documentation.

It does not document tools for creating, updating, or deleting EDD records. The project is licensed under GPL-3.0.
