## What docmcp — Word & Excel files MCP server does

docmcp — Word & Excel files MCP server generates actual Microsoft Word and Excel files from structured input instead of returning Markdown or encoded file data. The Word generator can create headings, paragraphs, bulleted or numbered lists, tables, and page breaks. A `rtl` option supports right-to-left content for Hebrew and Arabic.

The Excel generator creates workbooks with multiple sheets. It can add bold, frozen header rows, automatic filters, and sized columns, while retaining numeric values as numbers. These details make the output more suitable for opening and continuing to edit in office applications.

## How it works

The service exposes three MCP tools: `create_docx`, `create_xlsx`, and `usage`. The two creation tools write generated files and return a result that lets the client access them. In hosted mode, the result contains a short-lived download URL rather than embedding the file as base64 data. Hosted links expire after 24 hours.

There are two runtime modes. The `--stdio` mode is intended for a local MCP client and does not use authentication, quotas, or expiring links. It writes files to `OUT_DIR` and returns their paths. The default mode serves MCP over HTTP at `/mcp`; it requires an API key, meters usage, and serves files through URLs.

## Setup and configuration

For local use, install dependencies with `npm install`, then register the repository entry point with an MCP client using the `--stdio` argument. The configuration uses the Node executable and the repository's `tsx` launcher. Use absolute paths because the client may start with a minimal `PATH`. The generated files go to `OUT_DIR`, which defaults to `out`.

For hosted deployment, run `npm start` and expose the `/mcp` endpoint. `DATABASE_URL` is required and must point to a Postgres database. `BASE_URL` should be set to the public service address because it is included in generated download links. `PORT` defaults to `8787`. The repository documents deployment on Docker-compatible hosts and gives Render with Neon as an example.

A free key can be requested with `POST /keys/free`; the documented free plan allows 10 documents per month. Paid plans and Stripe settings are optional deployment features. In hosted client configuration, send the key as a Bearer token in the HTTP `Authorization` header.

## Limitations and notes

docmcp — Word & Excel files MCP server does not generate PDFs. Hosted files are stored on the container filesystem and may become unavailable after a restart; links also expire after 24 hours. The hosted service stores keys, quotas, and related persistent state in Postgres.

A lost API key cannot currently be recovered because it is shown once on the success page. Free-key protection limits one key per IP every 24 hours and applies a global daily ceiling, but the README notes that these limits are not designed to stop determined abuse. The optional `/admin` route requires `ADMIN_TOKEN`; without it, the route returns 404.
