## Documentation

## What the devBoard MCP server does

The devBoard MCP server gives an AI assistant access to a single devBoard workspace. devBoard is a project tracker for freelancers and small development teams, with boards, epics, releases, tasks, comments, and time tracking. The assistant acts as the token owner, so available actions depend on that user's role.

The server can retrieve workspace information, search and inspect items, show assigned work, and run saved views. It can create, update, move, and archive items, although items cannot be deleted through MCP. Comment tools support adding, editing, and deleting comments. Personal to-dos and notifications are also available.

## How it works

The service is hosted at `https://api.getdevboard.app/mcp` and uses Streamable HTTP. Each request requires an `Authorization: Bearer <token>` header. Tokens are created in the devBoard Mac app under **Settings → Developer** and belong to the workspace that was open when they were created.

A token represents its owner rather than an administrator account. Member tokens can perform member-level actions, while guest access is limited to reading the workspace and guests cannot create tokens. Revoking a token in the Developer settings stops it from working. Several client configurations require separate tokens when connecting to multiple clients.

The server also includes workflow-oriented tools. `start_work` assigns the item to the caller, moves it to In progress, starts its timer, and returns a branch name. `finish_work` stops the timer, adds a comment, and moves the item to its next status. Time can also be started, stopped, logged, edited, deleted, or reviewed through timesheet tools.

## Setup and configuration

Create a token in the Mac app, then configure an MCP client with the service URL and bearer header. Claude Code can add the server with its HTTP transport command. Cursor uses an entry in `~/.cursor/mcp.json`, while VS Code can prompt for the token through a password input instead of storing it directly in the file. Claude Desktop connects through `mcp-remote`; the provider's setup page contains its exact configuration block.

The setup page at `https://getdevboard.app/mcp` documents client-specific instructions. The repository also contains an Agent Plugins package, but imported plugins do not include secrets; the client must receive the Authorization header separately.

## Tools and capabilities

Available tool groups cover:

- Workspace and item lookup, search, assigned work, and saved views
- Item creation, updates, movement, and archiving
- Comment creation, editing, and deletion
- Starting and finishing development work
- Timers, time entries, and timesheets
- Personal to-dos and inbox notifications
- Admin-only release and label creation

A related REST API is available at `https://api.getdevboard.app/dev/v1` for workspace identity, projects, items, pull requests, and item status changes. GitHub pull requests can also be linked to items when their title, body, or branch includes the item key, with status changes triggered when the pull request opens, merges, or closes.

## Limitations and notes

The devBoard MCP server does not delete items, change workspace settings, or manage members and invitations. Those operations remain in the devBoard app. Admin-only tools such as release and label creation require the corresponding role.

The repository documents the hosted server and registry or plugin metadata; the backend server itself is not open source. Authentication is workspace-scoped, and devBoard stores only a hash of each token.
