## What Delimit — API Governance for AI Coding Assistants does

Delimit combines API change analysis with local continuity for AI coding workflows. It can discover OpenAPI specifications, frameworks, security issues, and tests in a repository, then create a merge-gate configuration from a policy preset. The gate checks proposed API changes against a baseline and reports breaking changes or leaked secrets.

The project also keeps decisions, tasks, and handoffs on the local machine. A later session can retrieve that shared record even when the work moves between supported coding assistants. Terminal commands can save and search memories, while `delimit chat` supports full sessions with configured Copilot or Muse models.

For repository changes, Delimit can wrap an assistant run and produce a local attestation containing the repository state before and after the run, changed files, gate results, and an HMAC-SHA256 signature. Attestations can be checked offline.

## How it works

The command-line package is available through `npx delimit-cli`. Running `npx delimit-cli setup` adds Delimit to supported assistants found on the machine. The setup flow configures Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor, among others named by the project, so they can use the same saved records.

For API governance, `scan` identifies repository material that Delimit can inspect, and `init` creates the merge-gate configuration using the default, strict, or relaxed preset. `lint` compares an old and new specification with policy applied. `diff` reports structural additions, removals, and modifications without applying policy. `semver` deterministically classifies the change as MAJOR, MINOR, PATCH, or NONE, while `impact` scans the dependency manifest for downstream callers.

When a result requires judgment, `deliberate` sends the question to configured model CLIs or API keys and presents areas of agreement and disagreement. The supported model paths include Claude, GPT through Codex, Gemini through Antigravity, Grok, DeepSeek, and Muse.

## Setup and configuration

Start with:

```bash
npx delimit-cli setup
```

For a repository merge gate, use:

```bash
npx delimit-cli scan
npx delimit-cli init
```

The zero-configuration check can run directly in a repository:

```bash
npx delimit-cli check
```

Useful options include `--staged` for staged files only, `--base` for comparison with a Git reference, `--fix` for migration guidance, and `--record` to save a content-pinned check record. Records are written under `.delimit/records/` by default. The `chat` command can run configured Copilot or Muse sessions, for example `npx delimit-cli chat --model copilot`.

## Tools and capabilities

- Discover repository specifications, frameworks, security issues, and tests with `delimit_scan`.
- Create merge-gate policy configuration with `delimit_init`.
- Lint API changes with `delimit_lint`.
- Inspect endpoint, schema, parameter, and other structural differences with `delimit_diff`.
- Classify API version impact with `delimit_semver`.
- Estimate downstream caller impact with `delimit_impact`.
- Ask configured models to evaluate disputed governance decisions with `delimit_deliberate`.
- Save and retrieve cross-session decisions through Delimit’s local memory workflow.
- Create and verify local signed attestations for wrapped assistant runs.

## Limitations and notes

The merge gate is advisory by default; it can be switched to enforcing mode. Attestation verification is available offline through `delimit seal-verify`, while hosted replay is not available. The deliberation workflow depends on model CLIs or API keys configured by the user. Delimit’s local records and attestations are intended to preserve evidence and context on the machine rather than provide a hosted project history.
